NASA's ATHLETE Warms Up For High Desert Run
Pasadena CA (JPL) Aug 02, 2010
Pasadena CA (JPL) Aug 02, 2010 Engineers from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory are currently putting their All-Terrain, Hex-Limbed, Extra-Terrestrial Explorer (ATHLETE) through a series of long-drive tests on the long, dirt roads found adjacent to JPL. The JPL grounds do not include an unpaved area of sufficient size for testing such a large robot over a long distance. Some of the dirt roads in the Arroyo Seco (a wash located next to JPL) are wide enough for ATHLETE, and its close proximity ... read more

LORRI Looks Back At "Old Friend" Jupiter
Baltimore MD (SPX) Jul 28, 2010
In early 2007 New Horizons flew through the Jupiter system, getting a speed-boost from the giant planet's gravity while snapping stunning, close-up images of Jupiter and its largest moons. Fast forward to 2010 and New Horizons has given us another glimpse of old friend Jupiter, this time from a vantage point more than 16 times the distance between Earth and the Sun, and almost 1000 times a ... more

Spacequakes Rumble Near Earth
Huntsville AL (SPX) Jul 28, 2010
Researchers using NASA's fleet of five THEMIS spacecraft have discovered a form of space weather that packs the punch of an earthquake and plays a key role in sparking bright Northern Lights. They call it "the spacequake." A spacequake is a temblor in Earth's magnetic field. It is felt most strongly in Earth orbit, but is not exclusive to space. The effects can reach all the way down to ... more

More than water key in other Earths search
Potsdam, Germany (UPI) Jul 26, 2010
The hunt for Earth-like planets in the universe, which usually looks for where water might exist, should consider photosynthesis instead, German scientists say. Researchers at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research argue while primitive life can exist without photosynthesis, it would be necessary for more complex multicellular organisms to emerge, Astrobiology Magazine report ... more

Research Yields Greater Precision In Determining Age of Meteorites
Tucson AZ (SPX) Jul 26, 2010
Researchers have aged dated a very important group of meteorites with far greater precision than previously possible by using a different type of radioactive dating on a particularly difficult type of specimen to study. The project found that the asteroid from which ureilite meteorites are derived differentiated - or separated into parts of different composition - within 5 million years of the formation of the Solar System, said Cyrena Anne Goodrich, senior scientist at the Planetary Science Insti ... read more
