Odds For Life Better In Photosynthesis Zones
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jul 26, 2010
By calculating where photosynthesis might be possible around the galaxy, scientists are developing a new way to figure out where Earth-like planets with life might be located. When seeking to figure out where life might evolve, researchers have often focused on the "habitable zones" around stars, where the heat from the star is at the perfect level for liquid water to exist on the surface of a planet in that zone. The reasoning there is that wherever there is water on Earth, there is a chance for ... read more

Russian Aerospace Company To Send Mission To Mercury
Farnborough, UK (SPX) Jul 23, 2010
Russian NPO Lavochkin intends to send an interplanetary research mission to Mercury in 4-5 years, Lavochkin's deputy general designer said at the Farnborough International Airshow 2010. "[The mission will consist of] a flight to Mercury and a landing on its surface," Maxim Martynov said. "We assume that the device will be a modified Phobos-Grunt satellite." He added that the NP ... more

Detector Technology Could Help NASA Find Earth-Like Exoplanets
Rochester NY (SPX) Jul 23, 2010
The hunt is on for Earth-like planets outside of our solar system. Since the 1990s, astronomers have detected more than 450 extrasolar planets - mostly large Jupiter-sized bodies - around nearby stars. Advances in technology are fueling the quest to find smaller, rocky planets resembling Earth and, possibly, evidence of life. Rochester Institute of Technology scientist Don Figer is develop ... more

Black Hole Jerked Around Twice
Boston MA (SPX) Jul 23, 2010
Scientists have found evidence that a giant black hole has been jerked around twice, causing its spin axis to point in a different direction from before. This discovery, made with new data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, might explain several mysterious-looking objects found throughout the Universe. The axis of the spinning black hole is thought to have moved, but not the black hole ... more

Scientist: SETI should switch 'channels'
Irvine, Calif. (UPI) Jul 21, 2010
The SETI Institute, listening to the cosmos for signs of signals from alien civilizations, may be monitoring the wrong "channels," a U.S. astrophysicist says. Gregory Benford of the University of California, Irvine, says such a civilization wanting to announce it presence would transmit "cost-optimized" narrowly focused signals, not the continuous omni-directional signals the SETI program has been scanning for, a university release said Wednesday. "This approach is more like Twitter and ... read more
