Brilliant Star In A Colourful Neighbourhood
Paris, France (SPX) Jul 29, 2010
A spectacular new image from ESO's Wide Field Imager at the La Silla Observatory in Chile shows the brilliant and unusual star WR 22 and its colourful surroundings. WR 22 is a very hot and bright star that is shedding its atmosphere into space at a rate many millions of times faster than the Sun. It lies in the outer part of the dramatic Carina Nebula from which it formed. Very massive stars live fast and die young. Some of these stellar beacons have such intense radiation passing through their th ... read more

Caltech Team Finds Evidence Of Water In Moon Minerals
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jul 23, 2010
That dry, dusty moon overhead? Seems it isn't quite as dry as it's long been thought to be. Although you won't find oceans, lakes, or even a shallow puddle on its surface, a team of geologists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), working with colleagues at the University of Tennessee, has found structurally bound hydroxyl groups (i.e., water) in a mineral in a lunar rock returned ... more

Finding Frugal Aliens
Mountain View CA (SPX) Jul 23, 2010
For 50 years, humans have scanned the skies with radio telescopes for distant electronic signals indicating the existence of intelligent alien life. The search - centered at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif. - has tapped into our collective fascination with the concept that we may not be alone in the universe. But the effort has so far proved fruitless, and the scientific communi ... more

Elusive Buckyballs Found In Space For First Time
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jul 23, 2010
Astronomers using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope have discovered carbon molecules, known as "buckyballs," in space for the first time. Buckyballs are soccer-ball-shaped molecules that were first observed in a laboratory 25 years ago. They are named for their resemblance to architect Buckminster Fuller's geodesic domes, which have interlocking circles on the surface of a partial sphere. Buc ... more

Clues To Origin Of Mysterious Dark Gamma-Ray Bursts
Kyoto, Japan (SPX) Jul 23, 2010
A research team led by astronomers from Kyoto University, Tokyo Institute of Technology, and the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan used the Subaru Telescope to observe a dark gamma-ray burst (GRB) that provides clues for understanding the origin of dark gamma-ray bursts. Their research is a very rare case of the detection of a dark GRB's host galaxy and afterglow in the near-infrared wavelength. They not only found that the host galaxy of this GRB is one of the most massive GRB host galax ... read more
