Spacequakes Rumble Near Earth
Huntsville AL (SPX) Jul 28, 2010
Researchers using NASA's fleet of five THEMIS spacecraft have discovered a form of space weather that packs the punch of an earthquake and plays a key role in sparking bright Northern Lights. They call it "the spacequake." A spacequake is a temblor in Earth's magnetic field. It is felt most strongly in Earth orbit, but is not exclusive to space. The effects can reach all the way down to the surface of Earth itself. "Magnetic reverberations have been detected at ground stations all around t ... read more

Cassini Sees Moon Building Giant Snowballs In Saturn Ring
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jul 23, 2010
While orbiting Saturn for the last six years, NASA's Cassini spacecraft has kept a close eye on the collisions and disturbances in the gas giant's rings. They provide the only nearby natural laboratory for scientists to see the processes that must have occurred in our early solar system, as planets and moons coalesced out of disks of debris. New images from Cassini show icy particles in Sa ... more

NASA Goes Deep In Search Of Extreme Environments
Woods Hole MA (SPX) Jul 22, 2010
An expedition partially funded by NASA, part of a program to search extreme environments for geological, biological and chemical clues to the origins and evolution of life, has discovered the deepest known hydrothermal vent in the world, nearly 5,000 meters (16,400 feet) below the surface of the western Caribbean Sea. The research will help extend our understanding of the limits to which l ... more

Russian Aerospace Company To Send Mission To Mercury
Farnborough, UK (SPX) Jul 23, 2010
Russian NPO Lavochkin intends to send an interplanetary research mission to Mercury in 4-5 years, Lavochkin's deputy general designer said at the Farnborough International Airshow 2010. "[The mission will consist of] a flight to Mercury and a landing on its surface," Maxim Martynov said. "We assume that the device will be a modified Phobos-Grunt satellite." He added that the NPO is currently engaged in a pre-design mission. Martynov also said that similar missions are planned for ... read more
