Behold The Violent History Of Saturn's White Whale Moon
Pasadena CA (JPL) Feb 22, 2010
Like the battered white whale Moby Dick taunting Captain Ahab, Saturn's moon Prometheus surges toward the viewer in a 3-D image from NASA's Cassini spacecraft. The image exposes the irregular shape and circular surface scars on Prometheus, pointing to a violent history. These craters are probably the remnants from impacts long ago. Prometheus is one of Saturn's innermost moons. It orbits the gas-giant at a distance of about 140,000 kilometers (86,000 miles) and is 86 kilometers (53 miles) ac ... read more

Most Precise Test Yet Of Einstein's Gravitational Redshift
Berkeley CA (SPX) Feb 18, 2010
While airplane and rocket experiments have proved that gravity makes clocks tick more slowly - a central prediction of Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity - a new experiment in an atom interferometer measures this slowdown 10,000 times more accurately than before, and finds it to be exactly what Einstein predicted. The result shows once again how well Einstein's theory describes ... more

Batavia IL (SPX) Feb 19, 2010
Batavia IL (SPX) Feb 19, 2010 Three decades ago, no one had ever heard of particle astrophysics. How could the tiniest pieces of matter and the biggest objects in the universe coexist in a single field of science? Last month, the American Institute of Physics and the American Astronomical Society honored two scientists who, more than any others, made particle astrophysics, if not a househ ... more

A Drop In The Bucket
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Feb 19, 2010
The search for water on other planetary bodies has taken a giant leap forward in recent months. In November, NASA announced that it had found substantial quantities of water on the Moon. Earlier this month, the Cassini spacecraft obtained data about one of Saturn's moons, Enceladus, that may confirm the presence of sub-surface liquid water. While these missions scour our solar system for traces of water - a necessary condition for life - a group of scientists is looking beyond, at solar systems li ... read more
