Detecting Our Martian Cousins
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Feb 17, 2010
The iguanas of the Galapagos Islands have evolved many unique characteristics due to their isolation from mainland iguanas. Because they can't swim long distances, biologists believe that the first Galapagos iguanas arrived on natural rafts made from vegetation. The same thing may have happened across the ocean of space. Some researchers speculate that life on Mars - if there is any - may be composed of "island species" that were carried away from Earth on interplanetary meteorites. Or perha ... read more

Giant Ribbon At The Edge Of The Solar System: Mystery Solved
Huntsville AL (SPX) Jan 18, 2010
Last year, when NASA's IBEX (Interstellar Boundary Explorer) spacecraft discovered a giant ribbon at the edge of the solar system, researchers were mystified. They called it a "shocking result" and puzzled over its origin. Now the mystery may have been solved. "We believe the ribbon is a reflection," says Jacob Heerikhuisen, a NASA Heliophysics Guest Investigator from the University of Ala ... more

Astronomers Say Presence Of Water On Moon Will Lead To More Missions
Las Crucese NM (SPX) Feb 15, 2010
Through a collaborative effort that involved researchers around the world, NASA has learned that water does indeed exist on the moon - but don't crack out the bathing suits for a refreshing lunar dip just yet. Scientists still have to determine just how much water the moon holds and how we can utilize it. "The big picture here that we are all starting to understand is that the moon is not ... more

The Many Colors Of Star Birth
Los Angeles CA (SPX) Feb 15, 2010
A dramatic new image from the Gemini North telescope illustrates the dynamic and sometimes violent process of star birth. It also demonstrates the capabilities of new filters available to researchers using the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS). Known as Sharpless 2-106 (Sh2-106), the hourglass-shaped nebula in the new Gemini image is a stellar nursery made up of glowing gas and light ... more

Russian satellite breaks up over perplexed Mexicans
Pachuca, Mexico (AFP) Feb 11, 2010
A loud explosion and ball of fire that people in central Mexico reported seeing in the sky was actually a Russian satellite plunging back to earth, experts said Thursday. "We think it was the space wreckage of a Russian satellite that was catalogued by the Department of Defense of the United States and which we knew could pass over Mexican territory," said Fernando de la Peno, an engineer who is also a chief proponent of establishing a Mexican space agency. Reports of a large meteorite reached M ... read more
