Saturn Aurorae Images Unique To Science
Leicester UK (SPX) Feb 12, 2010
Scientists from the University of Leicester have led an international study to capture space images that are unique to science. Researchers using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope (HST) recently took advantage of the rare opportunity to record Saturn when its rings are edge-on, resulting in a unique movie featuring both of the giant planet's poles. Saturn is only in this position every 15 years and this prime orientation allowed a sustained study of both of its beautiful and dynamic aurorae that ... read more

ESO: Orion In A New Light
Paris, France (SPX) Feb 11, 2010
The Orion Nebula reveals many of its hidden secrets in a dramatic image taken by ESO's new VISTA survey telescope. The telescope's huge field of view can show the full splendor of the whole nebula and VISTA's infrared vision also allows it to peer deeply into dusty regions that are normally hidden and expose the curious behavior of the very active young stars buried there. VISTA - the Visi ... more

Young Galaxies Gorge On Gas
Bonn, Germany (SPX) Feb 11, 2010
Stars form from giant gas clouds in galaxies - the star-formation rate, however, has changed over cosmic timescales. In the young universe many more stars were born. Scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics, together with an international team of astronomers, have found a plausible explanation: a few billion years after the Big Bang, normal star-forming galaxie ... more

Seeing ExoPlanet Atmospheres From The Ground
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Feb 10, 2010
NASA astronomers have demonstrated that a David of a telescope can tackle Goliath-size questions in the quest to study Earth-like planets around other stars. Their work, reported in the journal Nature, provides a new tool for ground-based observatories, promising to accelerate by years the search for prebiotic, or life-related, molecules on planets orbiting stars beyond our solar system. The scientists reported on a new technique used with a relatively small Earth-based telescope to identify an or ... read more
