![]() Paris, France (ESA) Feb 05, 2010 Using data from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, astronomers have, for the first time, created a demographic census of galaxy types and shapes from a time before the Earth and the Sun existed, to the present day. The results show that, contrary to contemporary thought, more than half of the present-day spiral galaxies had so-called peculiar shapes only 6000 million years ago, which, if confirmed, highlights the importance of collisions and mergers in the recent past of many galaxies. It also p ... read more |

Giant Ribbon At The Edge Of The Solar System: Mystery Solved![]() Last year, when NASA's IBEX (Interstellar Boundary Explorer) spacecraft discovered a giant ribbon at the edge of the solar system, researchers were mystified. They called it a "shocking result" and puzzled over its origin. Now the mystery may have been solved. "We believe the ribbon is a reflection," says Jacob Heerikhuisen, a NASA Heliophysics Guest Investigator from the University of Ala ... more Merging Galaxies Create A Binary Quasar ![]() Astronomers have found the first clear evidence of a binary quasar within a pair of actively merging galaxies. Quasars are the extremely bright centers of galaxies surrounding super-massive black holes, and binary quasars are pairs of quasars bound together by gravity. Binary quasars, like other quasars, are thought to be the product of galaxy mergers. Until now, however, binary quasars ha ... more The Stars Behind The Curtain ![]() ESO is releasing a magnificent VLT image of the giant stellar nursery surrounding NGC 3603, in which stars are continuously being born. Embedded in this scenic nebula is one of the most luminous and most compact clusters of young, massive stars in our Milky Way, which therefore serves as an excellent "local" analogue of very active star-forming regions in other galaxies. The cluster also h ... more |

![]() Parkes, Australia (SPX) Feb 04, 2010 Who would think you could talk about planets and stars, telescopes and even show people the night sky, all from a moving train while indulging in 5 star service at the same time? Well you can and last month well known mid north coast astronomer Dave Reneke from Australasian Science magazine did just that, on board the new Southern Spirit, a sister train to the GHAN. David was invited by Great Southern Railways to take part in the inaugural rail journey of Spirit across Australia as a guest speaker ... read more |
