Obama cuts moon travel, links NASA to private firms
Washington (AFP) Feb 1, 2010
President Barack Obama Monday ditched US plans to return to the moon and hitched NASA's future to private industry in a budget calling for the space agency to stay close to Earth and do research. In budget proposals for NASA, Obama proposed increasing funding for the space agency to six billion dollars over five years. But he proposed dropping the massively over-budget program to develop a new-generation rocket called Constellation, put in place by former president George Bush and ... read more

Calling E.T. may not be a smart move, say some
London (AFP) Jan 29, 2010
In 2008, NASA beamed the Beatles song "Across the Universe" into deep space, sending a message of peace to any extraterrestrial who happens to be in the region of Polaris, also called the North Star, in 2439. "Amazing! Well done, NASA!" Paul McCartney said. "Send my love to the aliens." Who could argue with such a well-meaning, positive initiative? Quite a few, actually. As the c ... more

Prometheus: Over Easy
Pasadena CA (JPL) Feb 01, 2010
Looking for all intents and purposes like a celestial egg after a session in Saturn's skillet, Prometheus displayed its pockmarked, irregular surface for NASA's Cassini spacecraft on Jan. 27, 2010. Prometheus is one of Saturn's innermost moons. It orbits the gas-giant at a distance of 139,353 kilometers (85,590 miles) and is 86 kilometers (53 miles) across at its widest point. ... more

The Coolest Of Orbs
Hertfordshire, UK (SPX) Feb 01, 2010
Using the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) in Hawaii, a discovery has been made of an object which is technically known as a brown dwarf. What has excited astronomers are its very peculiar colours, which actually make it appear either very blue or very red, depending on which part of the spectrum is used to look at it. The object is known as SDSS1416+13B and it is in a wide orbit ... more

Black Hole Hunters Set New Distance Record
Paris, France (SPX) Jan 28, 2010
Astronomers using ESO's Very Large Telescope have detected, in another galaxy, a stellar-mass black hole much farther away than any other previously known. With a mass above fifteen times that of the Sun, this is also the second most massive stellar-mass black hole ever found. It is entwined with a star that will soon become a black hole itself. The stellar-mass black holes [1] found in the Milky Way weigh up to ten times the mass of the Sun and are certainly not be taken lightly, but, outside our ... read more
