The Coolest Of Orbs
Hertfordshire, UK (SPX) Feb 01, 2010
Using the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) in Hawaii, a discovery has been made of an object which is technically known as a brown dwarf. What has excited astronomers are its very peculiar colours, which actually make it appear either very blue or very red, depending on which part of the spectrum is used to look at it. The object is known as SDSS1416+13B and it is in a wide orbit around a somewhat brighter and warmer brown dwarf, SDSS1416+13A. The brighter member of the pair was detected ... read more

Obama to propose abandoning US return to Moon: report
Washington (AFP) Jan 29, 2010
President Barack Obama's 2011 budget, to be submitted to Congress Monday, will propose abandoning a program to return US astronauts to the Moon, two Florida newspapers said Thursday. Citing administration and NASA officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the reports said the White House would call on the US space agency to focus on other programs, including the development of comme ... more

Black Hole Hunters Set New Distance Record
Paris, France (SPX) Jan 28, 2010
Astronomers using ESO's Very Large Telescope have detected, in another galaxy, a stellar-mass black hole much farther away than any other previously known. With a mass above fifteen times that of the Sun, this is also the second most massive stellar-mass black hole ever found. It is entwined with a star that will soon become a black hole itself. The stellar-mass black holes [1] found in th ... more

Amateur Astronomers Discover Stellar Outburst
Washington DC (SPX) Jan 29, 2010
A discovery by two amateur astronomers in central Florida helped to set in motion a global network of ground- and space-based telescopes today, observing a violent explosion of a distant star in our Galaxy. The two astronomers, Dr. Barbara Harris of New Smyrna Beach and Shawn Dvorak of Clermont, were active participants in a global research campaign to monitor activity of the star U Scorpi ... more

Astronomers Find Rare Beast By New Means
Washington DC (SPX) Jan 28, 2010
For the first time, astronomers have found a supernova explosion with properties similar to a gamma-ray burst, but without seeing any gamma rays from it. The discovery, using the National Science Foundation's Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope, promises, the scientists say, to point the way toward locating many more examples of these mysterious explosions. "We think that radio observations will soon be a more powerful tool for finding this kind of supernova in the nearby Universe than gamma-ra ... read more
