Studying Titan's Lakes On Earth
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jan 29, 2010
The recent discovery of lakes on Saturn's moon Titan make it the only other object in the solar system known to have liquid on its surface. However, dipping 179 degrees C (290 degrees F) below freezing, these lakes are definitely not filled with water. "The water is frozen so solid on Titan that you can liken it to silicate rocks on Earth," says Vincent Chevrier of the University of Arkansas. The liquid on Titan is likely a hydrocarbon cocktail of mostly methane and ethane, judging from obse ... read more

India To Launch Chandrayaan-2 By 2013
Bangalore, India (PTI) Jan 29, 2010
Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) chief K. Radhakrishnan on Wednesday said the configuration for the new moon mission 'Chandrayaan-2' is being finalized and added that it would be launched by 2013. Chandrayaan-2, which will be a joint effort between ISRO and Russia, will consist of a lander and a rover for a soft land on moon. The rover will move on the surface of the moon and pick up samples of rocks and soil and conduct a chemical analysis on it. The data would then be sent to the ... read more

Are The Largest Stars Born Like Our Sun
Hilo HI (SPX) Jan 28, 2010
Explaining how the most massive stars are born, deep within their stellar nurseries, is one of the most persistent mysteries in modern astronomy. Now, observations at the Gemini Observatory provide convincing new evidence that these stellar heavyweights may be born in much the same manner as lightweights like our Sun. "The problem is that when the most massive stars form it happens very qu ... more

Seed Bank For The Moon
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Jan 27, 2010
In 2009, it was found that some polar regions of the Moon are the coldest places in the solar system. It's even colder there than distant, frozen Pluto! Some craters are permanently blocked from sunlight, and apparently lack sources of heat from underground. These areas aren't just cold at certain times. They never get warm at all. The Moon's cold traps have been celebrated for another rea ... more

Astronomers Find Rare Beast By New Means
Washington DC (SPX) Jan 28, 2010
For the first time, astronomers have found a supernova explosion with properties similar to a gamma-ray burst, but without seeing any gamma rays from it. The discovery, using the National Science Foundation's Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope, promises, the scientists say, to point the way toward locating many more examples of these mysterious explosions. "We think that radio observat ... more

ISRO Launches Rockets To Study Eclipse
New Delhi, India (PTI) Jan 18, 2010
The millennium's longest solar eclipse gave a unique chance to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientists and astronomy lovers to study the event on Friday, with the space agency launching rockets and celestial gazers aiming telescopes at the sky to watch the moon's shadow covering the sun. Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram, launched a series of Rohini Sounding Rockets from TERLS, Thumba, to investigate the effects of the solar eclipse on the atmosphere.
