Astronomers Say Presence Of Water On Moon Will Lead To More Missions
Las Crucese NM (SPX) Feb 15, 2010
Through a collaborative effort that involved researchers around the world, NASA has learned that water does indeed exist on the moon - but don't crack out the bathing suits for a refreshing lunar dip just yet. Scientists still have to determine just how much water the moon holds and how we can utilize it. "The big picture here that we are all starting to understand is that the moon is not as dry as we thought," said Nancy Chanover, an assistant professor at New Mexico State University. The Active Moons Of Saturn
Washington DC (SPX) Feb 15, 2010
Like midnight taggers, Saturn's moons Dione, Tethys, Mimas and Rhea may be spraying their unique signatures all over Saturn's environment when no one's looking. Or maybe not; they've never been caught in the act, unlike their sibling moon Enceladus, which has been repeatedly observed shooting a dramatic plume of ice vapor high above its surface. Other than Enceladus, there are just a few a ... more

Why Fewer Stars Are Born Today
Tucson AZ (SPX) Feb 15, 2010
University of Arizona astronomers have helped solve a mystery surrounding the birth of stars in galaxies that has long puzzled scientists. Their results are published in Nature. "We have known for more than a decade that in the early universe - three to five billion years after the Big Bang or nine to eleven billion years before today - galaxies churned out new stars at a much faster rate ... more

Saturn Aurorae Images Unique To Science
Leicester UK (SPX) Feb 12, 2010
Scientists from the University of Leicester have led an international study to capture space images that are unique to science. Researchers using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope (HST) recently took advantage of the rare opportunity to record Saturn when its rings are edge-on, resulting in a unique movie featuring both of the giant planet's poles. Saturn is only in this position every 1 ... more

NASA Launches Another Solar Explorer On Five Year Mission
Washington DC (SPX) hFeb 12, 2010
Beginning Thursday, 11 February 2010, our Sun is being monitored round the clock - the space-based Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) was launched successfully from Cape Canaveral on an Atlas V. The continuous stream of data supplied by this observatory will substantially improve our ability to forecast space weather. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) is supporting this NASA-led mission with the SDO Data Center at the Max-Planck-Institute for Solar System Research (MPS) in Katlenburg-Lindau. S ... read more
