3D Sun For The iPhone
Huntsville AL (SPX) Feb 18, 2010
Imagine holding the entire sun in the palm of your hand. Now you can. A new iPhone app developed by NASA-supported programmers delivers a live global view of the sun directly to your cell phone. Users can fly around the star, zoom in on active regions, and monitor solar activity. "This is more than cool," says Dick Fisher, director of NASA's Heliophysics Division in Washington DC. "It's transformative. For the first time ever, we can monitor the sun as a living, breathing 3-dimensional sphere." ... read more

Giant Ribbon At The Edge Of The Solar System: Mystery Solved
Huntsville AL (SPX) Jan 18, 2010
Last year, when NASA's IBEX (Interstellar Boundary Explorer) spacecraft discovered a giant ribbon at the edge of the solar system, researchers were mystified. Are TGFs Hazardous To Air Travellers
Huntsville AL (SPX) Feb 17, 2010
Instruments scanning outer space for cataclysmic explosions called gamma-ray bursts are detecting intense flashes of gamma-ray energy right here in the friendly skies of Earth. These terrestrial gamma-ray flashes, or TGFs, blast through thunderstorms close to the altitude where commercial airliners fly. In fact, they could be too close for comfort. In a recent study,* scientists estimated that airline passengers could be exposed to 400 chest X-rays worth of ... read more
