Primordial Magnetic Fields Discovered Across The Universe
Los Angeles CA (SPX) Sep 23, 2010
Scientists from the California Institute of Technology and UCLA have discovered evidence of "universal ubiquitous magnetic fields" that have permeated deep space between galaxies since the time of the Big Bang. Caltech physicist Shin'ichiro Ando and Alexander Kusenko, a professor of physics and astronomy at UCLA, report the discovery in a paper to be published in an upcoming issue of Astrophysical Journal Letters; the research is currently available online. Ando and Kusenko studied images of ... read more

Satisfaction with computers at all-time high in US
San Francisco (AFP) Sept 21, 2010
US computer buyers are happy as ever, with Apple machines yielding top satisfaction and Windows 7 operating system making amends for a loathed prior generation of the Microsoft software. Annual figures released on Tuesday by The American Customer Satisfaction Index showed a four-percent improvement in the way people felt about their computers, with Apple leading the way by pleasing 86 percen ... more

Cosmic Ice Sculptures
Washington DC (SPX) Sep 20, 2010
Enjoying a frozen treat on a hot summer day can leave a sticky mess as it melts in the Sun and deforms. In the cold vacuum of space, there is no edible ice cream, but there is radiation from massive stars that is carving away at cold molecular clouds, creating bizarre, fantasy-like structures. These one-light-year-tall pillars of cold hydrogen and dust, imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope ... more

Physicists Cross Hurdle In Quantum Manipulation Of Matter
San Francisco CA (SPX) Sep 21, 2010
Finding ways to control matter at the level of single atoms and electrons fascinates many scientists and engineers because the ability to manipulate single charges and single magnetic moments (spins) may help researchers penetrate deep into the mysteries of quantum mechanics and modern solid-state physics. It may also allow development of new, highly sensitive magnetometers with nanometer ... more

3-D Computer Simulations Help Envision Supernovae Explosions
Princeton NJ (SPX) Sep 17, 2010
For scientists, supernovae are true superstars - massive explosions of huge, dying stars that shine light on the shape and fate of the universe. For a brief burst of time, supernovae can radiate more energy than the sun will emit in its lifetime. With the potential energy of 25 hundred trillion trillion nuclear weapons, they can outshine entire galaxies, producing some of the biggest explosions ever seen, and helping track distances across the cosmos. Now, a Princeton-led team has found a wa ... read more
