Earth To Have Closest Encounter With Jupiter Until 2022
Huntsville AL (SPX) Sep 21, 2010
Been outside at midnight lately? There's something you really need to see. Jupiter is approaching Earth for the closest encounter between the two planets in more than a decade--and it is dazzling. The night of closest approach is Sept. 20-21st. This is also called "the night of opposition" because Jupiter will be opposite the sun, rising at sunset and soaring overhead at midnight. Among all denizens of the midnight sky, only the moon itself will be brighter. Earth-Jupiter encounters happen e ... read more

NASA's Lunar Spacecraft Completes Exploration Mission Phase
Washington DC (SPX) Sep 16, 2010
NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, or LRO, will complete the exploration phase of its mission on Sept. 16, after a number of successes that transformed our understanding of Earth's nearest neighbor. LRO completed a one-year exploration mission in a polar orbit approximately 31 miles above the moon's surface. It produced a comprehensive map of the lunar surface in unprecedented detail; se ... more

Home Electrical Wiring Acts As Antenna To Receive Low-Power Sensor Data
Seattle WA (SPX) Sep 17, 2010
If these walls had ears, they might tell a homeowner some interesting things. Like when water is dripping into an attic crawl space, or where an open window is letting hot air escape during winter. The walls do have ears, thanks to a device that uses a home's electrical wiring as a giant antenna. Sensors developed by researchers at the University of Washington and the Georgia Institute of ... more

Herschel Finds Hot Water Vapor Around a Carbon Star
Paris, France (SPX) Sep 15, 2010
Using the European Herschel space telescope, an international team including astronomers at Observatoire de Paris, Institut de Radio Astronomie Millimetrique and Observatoire de Grenoble in France observed hot water vapor formed somewhere that was previously thought to be impossible: deep into the atmosphere of a red giant pulsating carbon star, CW Leonis. This result, published in the 2 September 2010 issue of Nature magazine, should help to understand how this type of evolved star produces and e ... read more
