![]() Huntsville AL (SPX) Sep 14, 2010 Giant planet GJ 436b in the constellation Leo is missing something. Would you believe swamp gas? To the surprise of astronomers who have been studying the Neptune-sized planet using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, GJ 436b has very little methane (CH4). "Methane should be abundant on a planet of this temperature and size, but we found 7000 times less methane than what the models predict," says Kevin Stevenson of the University of Central Florida (UCF). Stevenson was lead author of a paper reporting ... read more |

A Nearby Galactic Exemplar![]() ESO has released a spectacular new image of NGC 300, a spiral galaxy similar to the Milky Way, and located in the nearby Sculptor Group of galaxies. Taken with the Wide Field Imager (WFI) at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile, this 50-hour exposure reveals the structure of the galaxy in exquisite detail. NGC 300 lies about six million light-years away and appears to be about two thirds th ... more Russia To Test Unmanned Lander For Mars Moon Mission ![]() Russian scientists are due to carry out tests of an unmanned lander that will be used in a 2011 mission to Phobos, one of the moons of Mars. The Phobos-Grunt spacecraft will be sent to the surface of Phobos and will then fly back to Earth with soil samples. "The aim of the test is to narrow down the lander's projected impact location on the surface of the Earth," a statement by the C ... more Asteroid Cornucopia ![]() New research from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope reveals that asteroids somewhat near Earth, termed near-Earth objects, are a mixed bunch, with a surprisingly wide array of compositions. Like a pinata filled with everything from chocolates to fruity candies, these asteroids come in assorted colors and compositions. Some are dark and dull; others are shiny and bright. ![]() Washington (AFP) Sept 8, 2010 Two asteroids were set to pass close to Earth on Wednesday but posed no risk, the US space agency NASA said. NASA said its sky observation from Arizona discovered the objects on September 5. One asteroid was believed to be 10 to 20 meters (32 to 65 feet) in size and was expected to pass within 248,000 kilometers (154,000 miles) of Earth at 0951 GMT. The second object estimated to be six to 14 meters (20 to 45 feet) in size was set to pass within 79,000 kilometers (49,000 mile) 2112 GMT. "Bot ... read more |
