Deadly Tides Mean Early Exit For Hot Jupiters
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Sep 10, 2010
Bad news for planet hunters: most of the "hot Jupiters" that astronomers have been searching for in star clusters were likely destroyed long ago by their stars. In a paper accepted for publication by the Astrophysical Journal, John Debes and Brian Jackson of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., offer this new explanation for why no transiting planets (planets that pass in front of their stars and temporarily block some of the light) have been found yet in star clusters. The ... read more

Universe Chaotic From Very Beginning
Evanston IL (SPX) Sep 08, 2010
Seven years ago Northwestern University physicist Adilson E. Motter conjectured that the expansion of the universe at the time of the big bang was highly chaotic. Now he and a colleague have proven it using rigorous mathematical arguments. The study, published by the journal Communications in Mathematical Physics, reports not only that chaos is absolute but also the mathematical tools that ... more

Asteroid survey gathers mixed bag
Washington (UPI) Sep 2, 2010
A survey of near-Earth asteroids shows they come in a far wider variety of shapes, sizes and surfaces than previously thought, U.S. researchers say. The findings are based on infrared scanning of about 100 asteroids by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, SPACE.com reported Thursday. The effort is part of a larger Spitzer telescope project to look at 700 near-Earth objects to identify ... more

Chandrayaan-2 Will Try Out New Ideas And Technologies
Bangalore, India (SPX) Sep 08, 2010
Chandrayaan-2, the proposed second Indian mission to moon, would undertake "extremely good" experiments and try out new technologies but accommodating foreign payloads on board does not appear to be a possibility at this stage. The first edition of the moon odyssey had six foreign payloads and five Indian ones on board but heavy orbiter (satellite) and lander weight this time has put const ... more

NASA's Magnetospheric Mission Passes Major Milestone
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Sep 08, 2010
The universe is still an arcane place that scientists know very little about, but a new NASA Solar Terrestrial Probe mission is going to shed light on one especially mysterious event called magnetic reconnection. It occurs when magnetic lines of force cross, cancel, and reconnect releasing magnetic energy in the form of heat and charged-particle kinetic energy. On the sun, magnetic reconnection causes solar flares more powerful than several atomic bombs combined. In Earth's atmosphere, magnetic re ... read more
