New Insights Into The Moon's Rich Geologic Complexity
Los Angeles CA (SPX) Sep 20, 2010
The moon is more geologically complex than previously thought, scientists report in two papers published in the journal Science. Their conclusion is based on data from the Diviner Lunar Radiometer Experiment aboard NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), an unmanned mission to comprehensively map the entire moon. The spacecraft orbits some 31 miles above the moon's surface. The new data reveal previously unseen compositional differences in the moon's crustal highlands and have confirmed the pre ... read more

Planck's First Glimpse At Galaxy Clusters And A New Supercluster
Paris, France (ESA) Sep 16, 2010
Surveying the microwave sky, Planck has obtained its very first images of galaxy clusters, amongst the largest objects in the Universe, by means of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect, a characteristic signature they imprint on the Cosmic Microwave Background. Joining forces in a fruitful collaboration between ESA missions, XMM-Newton followed up Planck's detections and revealed that one of them is a ... more

Herschel Finds Hot Water Vapor Around a Carbon Star
Paris, France (SPX) Sep 15, 2010
Using the European Herschel space telescope, an international team including astronomers at Observatoire de Paris, Institut de Radio Astronomie Millimetrique and Observatoire de Grenoble in France observed hot water vapor formed somewhere that was previously thought to be impossible: deep into the atmosphere of a red giant pulsating carbon star, CW Leonis. This result, published in the 2 S ... more

Bringing Grace To Earth Mass And Water Movements
Pasadena CA (JPL) Sep 15, 2010
NASA and European researchers have conducted a novel study to simultaneously measure, for the first time, trends in how water is transported across Earth's surface and how the solid Earth responds to the retreat of glaciers following the last major Ice Age, including the shifting of Earth's center of mass. To calculate the changes, scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, ... more

New Results On Dwarf Galaxy Evolution
Lisbon, Portugal (SPX) Sep 13, 2010
The 'Local Cosmology from Isolated Dwarfs (LCID)' team showed their most recent results that suggest that reionization alone is not able to stop star formation in Dwarf Galaxies, as had been expected. The results were presented during the European Week of Astronomy and Space Sciences. The Big Bang model predicts that the universe started out as completely ionized plasma, which later cooled and allowed all of the atoms to recombine into neutral atoms. The first generation of stars and galaxie ... read more
