Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer Arrives At Launch Site
Paris, France (ESA) Aug 27, 2010
One of the most complex space scientific instruments ever built, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) arrived at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, escorted by astronauts who will fly with it on the Space Shuttle in February 2011. The antimatter hunter AMS-02 began the first stage of its voyage to the International Space Station (ISS) from Geneva international airport, in Switzerland. During a ceremony organised by the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), the experiment was loa ... read more

British bacteria are hardy space travelers
London (UPI) Aug 23, 2010
Bacteria from cliffs on the south coast of England have proved themselves hardy astronauts, surviving a year and a half as space travelers, researchers say. Taken from the cliffs near the small fishing village of Beer in Devon, the bacteria were placed on the outside of the International Space Station to see how they would deal with harsh conditions in Earth orbit, the BBC reported. ... more

SETI search may be seeking wrong target
Santa Clara, Calif. (UPI) Aug 23, 2010
The search for extraterrestrial life might have more luck listening for sentient machines than for sentient beings, a prominent researcher in the field says. SETI, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, has until now sought radio signals from worlds like Earth, but lead SETI astronomer Seth Shostak argues the time between aliens developing radio technology and moving on to artifi ... more

Fermi Detects Gamma-Rays From Exploding Nova
Washington DC (SPX) Aug 24, 2010
Using the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope satellite, astronomers have detected gamma rays from a nova for the first time, a finding that surprises both observers and theorists. The discovery dispels the long-held idea that nova explosions are not powerful enough to produce such high-energy radiation. These findings are published in Science with Ted ... more

Solar System older than thought
Paris (AFP) Aug 22, 2010
The Solar System could be nearly two million years older than thought, according to a study published on Sunday by the journal Nature Geoscience. The evidence comes from a 1.49-kilo (3.2-pound) meteorite, found in the Moroccan desert in 2004, that contains a "relict" mineral, which is one of the oldest solid materials formed after the birth of the Sun. Analysis of lead isotopes suggest the mineral was formed 4.45682 billion years ago, making the meteorite the oldest object ever found. As a r ... read more
