Pulverized Planet Dust May Lie Around Double Stars
Pasadena CA (SPX) Aug 24, 2010
Tight double-star systems might not be the best places for life to spring up, according to a new study using data from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. The infrared observatory spotted a surprisingly large amount of dust around three mature, close-orbiting star pairs. Where did the dust come from? Astronomers say it might be the aftermath of tremendous planetary collisions. "This is real-life science fiction," said Jeremy Drake of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, Cambridge, Mass. "O ... read more

A Hop, Skip And A Jump On The Moon - And Beyond
Boston MA (SPX) Aug 19, 2010
Although unmanned, wheeled rovers have explored the surfaces of the moon and Mars for decades, these vehicles have limits - they can't crawl inside craters, scale cliffs or travel long distances. For more than two years, a team of students led by Professor of the Practice of Astronautics and former NASA astronaut Jeffrey Hoffman in MIT's Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics has been ... more

IBEX Maps The Boundaries
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Aug 19, 2010
Since its October 2008 launch, NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) spacecraft has mapped the invisible interactions occurring at the edge of the solar system. The images reveal that the interactions between our home in the galaxy and interstellar space are surprisingly structured and intense. IBEX provides global imaging of the interstellar boundary much like a weather satellite p ... more

Eclipsing Pulsar Promises Clues To Crushed Matter
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Aug 19, 2010
Astronomers using NASA's Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) have found the first fast X-ray pulsar to be eclipsed by its companion star. Further studies of this unique stellar system will shed light on some of the most compressed matter in the universe and test a key prediction of Einstein's relativity theory. The pulsar is a rapidly spinning neutron star - the crushed core of a massive st ... more

China's Lunar Twins
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Aug 19, 2010
Before the end of 2010, China will have launched its second lunar probe. Chang'e 2 is an orbiting spacecraft that was originally built as a back-up for China's first lunar probe, Chang'e 1, which flew to the moon in 2007. The launch is widely tipped for some time in October. Sending the back-up spacecraft on its own mission makes sense. The spacecraft was already built, and the integrity of its design was confirmed by Chang'e 1's successful mission. By changing a few instruments, the mission ... read more
