Cosmic Lens Used To Probe Dark Energy For First Time
Pasadena CA (SPX) Aug 20, 2010
Astronomers have devised a new method for measuring perhaps the greatest puzzle of our universe - dark energy. This mysterious force, discovered in 1998, is pushing our universe apart at ever-increasing speeds. For the first time, astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope were able to take advantage of a giant magnifying lens in space - a massive cluster of galaxies - to narrow in on the nature of dark energy. Their calculations, when combined with data from other methods, significantly incr ... read more

Magnetic mega-star challenges stellar theory
Paris (AFP) Aug 18, 2010
A neutron star with a mighty magnetic field has thrown down the gauntlet to theories about stellar evolution and the birth of black holes, astronomers reported on Wednesday. The "magnetar" lies in a cluster of stars known as Westerlund 1, located 16,000 light years away in the constellation of Ara, the Altar. Westerlund 1, discovered in 1961 by a Swedish astronomer, is a favoured observa ... more

Evidence Of New Solar Activity From Observations Of Aurora In NZ
Boston MA (SPX) Aug 16, 2010
Scientists from Boston University's Center for Space Physics (CSP) has announced that they have sub-visual evidence of the onset of a new cycle of solar-terrestrial activity. The key results being reported deal with the fact that recent auroral displays at high latitudes (ones visible to the naked eye) were accompanied by far less luminous glows in the atmosphere at lower latitudes. "It's ... more

IBEX Spacecraft Finds Discoveries Close To Home
Washington DC (SPX) Aug 17, 2010
Imagine floating 35,000 miles above the sunny side of Earth. Our home planet gleams below, a majestic whorl of color and texture. All seems calm around you. With no satellites or space debris to dodge, you can just relax and enjoy the black emptiness of space. But looks can be deceiving. In reality, you've unknowingly jumped into an invisible mosh pit of electromagnetic mayhem - the place in space where a supersonic "wind" of charged particles from the Sun crashes head-on into the protective ... read more
