![]() Boston MA (SPX) Aug 16, 2010 Scientists from Boston University's Center for Space Physics (CSP) has announced that they have sub-visual evidence of the onset of a new cycle of solar-terrestrial activity. The key results being reported deal with the fact that recent auroral displays at high latitudes (ones visible to the naked eye) were accompanied by far less luminous glows in the atmosphere at lower latitudes. "It's exciting to see the return of aurora to mid-latitudes," Dr. Steve Smith said, referring to the periodic occurr ... read more |

Ambitious Survey Spots Stellar Nurseries![]() Astronomers scanning the skies as part of ESO's VISTA Magellanic Cloud survey have now obtained a spectacular picture of the Tarantula Nebula in our neighbouring galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud. This panoramic near-infrared view captures the nebula itself in great detail as well as the rich surrounding area of sky. The image was obtained at the start of a very ambitious survey of our ne ... more Making Sense Of Space Dust ![]() The chemical breakdown of minerals that may be lurking in space dust soon will be available to scientists around the world. Because space dust contains the basic ingredients that form planets, the University of Central Florida physicists' analysis could provide important clues about how the solar system formed and how life emerged. For decades, astrophysicists have been studying these clou ... more 'Dark matter' search to go underground ![]() U.S. physicists say they'll take their search to find and identify the universe's "dark matter" to new depths - into a Canadian mine almost a mile underground. University of Chicago researchers will take bubble chambers, instruments that can detect cosmic particles, to SNOLab, part of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory in Ontario, Canada, a university release said Wednesday. Sky and Telescope magazine predicts that the Perseid shower will be at or near its peak late on Wednesday night (the night of August 11-12) and, probably even better, late on Thursday night (August 12-13). "The moonless sky this year means the viewing will be ideal," notes Alan MacRo ... read more |
