NGC 4696: A Cosmic Question Mark
Boston MA (SPX) Aug 13, 2010
Curling around itself like a question mark, the unusual looking galaxy NGC 4696 itself begs many questions. Why is it such a strange shape? What are the odd, capillary-like filaments that stretch out of it? And what is the role of a large black hole in explaining its decidedly odd appearance? This picture, taken by Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys, is not just a beautiful snapshot of NGC 4696, the largest galaxy in the Centaurus Cluster (galaxy cluster Abell 3526). Perseid Meteors Return: Viewing Conditions Excellent
Palm Coast FL (SPX) Aug 10, 2010
The Perseid meteor shower, an annual celestial event beloved by millions of skywatchers around the world, returns to the night sky this week. And because the Moon is new, there will be no moonlight to hinder the view. Sky and Telescope magazine predicts that the Perseid shower will be at or near its peak late on Wednesday night (the night of August 11-12) and, probably even better, late on ... more

M-Class Solar Flare Erupts
Washington DC (SPX) Aug 10, 2010
An M-class flare erupted in active sunspot region 1093, peaking at 1824 UTC on August 7, 2010. The eruption hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory observed the flare. The CME is not fully directed toward Earth, but some of the plasma cloud may glance the magnetosphere between August 9 and August 10, causing a geomagnetic disturbance and possible ... more

Hubble captures dramatic galaxy image
Washington (UPI) Aug 11, 2010
A new Hubble telescope image of a face-on spiral galaxy shows lanes of dust and gas at its center, evidence of ongoing star formation, U.S. astronomers say. A long-exposure image shows a majestic galaxy titled NGC 4911 located deep within the Coma Cluster of galaxies, which lies 320 million light-years away in the northern constellation of Coma Berenices, a NASA release said Tuesday. ... more
