STELLAR CHEMISTRY
A Galactic Spectacle
Washington DC (SPX) Aug 06, 2010
A beautiful new image of two colliding galaxies has been released by NASA's Great Observatories. The Antennae galaxies, located about 62 million light years from Earth, are shown in this composite image from the Chandra X-ray Observatory (blue), the Hubble Space Telescope (gold), and the Spitzer Space Telescope (red). The collision, which began more than 100 million years ago and is still occurring, has triggered the formation of millions of stars in clouds of dusts and gas in the galaxies. ... read more

Orion Nebula Gives Clues To Origin Of Life On Earth
Hilo HI (SPX) Aug 02, 2010
How did life on Earth begin? One hypothesis is that terrestrial life began when organics were delivered from outer space during the early, heavy bombardment phase of Earth's development. We know that several meteorites (e.g., Murchison) have amino acids with properties similar to those seen in biological amino acids, the building blocks of life. An international team of astronomers led by ... more

No Rings Around Saturn's Rhea
Ithaca NY (SPX) Aug 02, 2010
Something unknown is causing a strange, symmetrical structure in the charged-particle environment around Rhea, Saturn's second-largest moon. But contrary to 2008 reports, it's not a system of rings. Using NASA's orbiting Cassini spacecraft, a team of astronomers led by Cornell research associate Matthew Tiscareno searched for narrow rings, broad rings and any material from dust to giant bo ... more

Taking A Shot At The Sun
Huntsville AL (SPX) Aug 02, 2010
For a thrilling eight minutes, NASA researchers will soon get a peek at one of the sun's most mysterious regions, where temperatures fluctuate from tens of thousands of degrees Fahrenheit to several million, and solar flares and coronal mass ejections originate - potentially threatening spacecraft, Earth-based communications and the lives of explorers in space. To learn more about this tur ... more

NASA's ATHLETE Warms Up For High Desert Run
Pasadena CA (JPL) Aug 02, 2010
Pasadena CA (JPL) Aug 02, 2010 Engineers from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory are currently putting their All-Terrain, Hex-Limbed, Extra-Terrestrial Explorer (ATHLETE) through a series of long-drive tests on the long, dirt roads found adjacent to JPL. The JPL grounds do not include an unpaved area of sufficient size for testing such a large robot over a long distance. Some of the dirt roads in the Arroyo Seco (a wash located next to JPL) are wide enough for ATHLETE, and its close proximity ... read more
