Experiments Offer Tantalizing Clues As To Why Matter Prevails In The Universe
Washington DC (SPX) Aug 17, 2010
A large collaboration of physicists working at the Fermilab Tevatron particle collider has discovered evidence of an explanation for the prevalence of matter over antimatter in the universe. They found that colliding protons in their experiment produced short-lived B meson particles that almost immediately broke down into debris that included slightly more matter than antimatter. The two types of matter annihilate each other, so most of the material coming from these sorts of decays would disappea ... read more

Supernova's Spin On Life
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Aug 13, 2010
A mysterious bias in the way the building blocks of proteins twist could be due to supernovae, researchers now suggest. If correct, this could be evidence that the molecules of life weren't created on Earth, but came from elsewhere in the cosmos. Organic molecules are often chiral, meaning they come in two versions that are mirror images of each other, much as right and left hands appear i ... more

Cassini Hunting Enceladus 'Tigers' With Night Vision
Pasadena CA (JPL) Aug 13, 2010
NASA's Cassini spacecraft will be hunting for heat signatures at the "tiger stripes" in the dim south polar region of Saturn's moon Enceladus on Friday, Aug. 13. The closest approach will bring the spacecraft to within about 2,500 kilometers (1,600 miles) of the surface of Enceladus. The tiger stripes - which are actually giant fissures that spew jets of water vapor and organic particles h ... more

Citizen Scientists Discover Rotating Pulsar
Washington DC (SPX) Aug 13, 2010
Idle computers are the astronomers' playground: Three citizen scientists--an American couple and a German--have discovered a new radio pulsar hidden in data gathered by the Arecibo Observatory. This is the first deep-space discovery by Einstein@Home, which uses donated time from the home and office computers of 250,000 volunteers from 192 different countries. This is the first genuine astr ... more

Making Sense Of Space Dust
Orlando FL (SPX) Aug 12, 2010
The chemical breakdown of minerals that may be lurking in space dust soon will be available to scientists around the world. Because space dust contains the basic ingredients that form planets, the University of Central Florida physicists' analysis could provide important clues about how the solar system formed and how life emerged. For decades, astrophysicists have been studying these clouds of dust, which contain ices, silicate minerals and iron compounds. But until the UCF team started looking a ... read more
