From 2-Trillion-Degree Heat, Researchers Create New Matter
College Station TX (SPX) Mar 08, 2010
A worldwide team of researchers, including 10 from Texas A and M University, have for the first time created a particle that is believed to have been in existence immediately after the creation of the universe - the so-called "Big Bang" - and it could lead to new questions and answers about some of the basic laws of physics because in essence, it creates a new form of matter. Researchers Carl Gagliardi, Saskia Mioduszewski, Robert Tribble, Matthew Cervantes, Rory Clarke, Martin Codrington, Pibero ... read more

MESSENGER's Odometer Reading: Four Billion Miles!
Baltimore MD (SPX) Mar 02, 2010
The MESSENGER spacecraft has crossed the four-billion-mile mark since its launch. The probe has completed about 81 percent of its journey toward its destination to be the first spacecraft to orbit the planet Mercury. That MESSENGER's odometer reading has reached another major milestone reminds us of the long and complex route that our spacecraft must follow. Mercury orbits deep within the ... more

First Observation Of T2K Neutrino Event At Super-Kamiokande
Kamiokande, Japan (SPX) Mar 01, 2010
UK particle physicists working on the multinational T2K project, which is designed to detect some of the least understood particles in the universe, have helped track their first neutrino which has travelled 185 miles (295 km) under Japan. The detection of the neutrino as it passed from the East to the West of the country means the study of the mysterious phenomenon of neutrino oscillation ... more

NASA radar finds ice on moon's north pole
Washington (AFP) March 1, 2010
A US radar that launched into space aboard an Indian spacecraft has detected craters filled with ice on the moon's north pole, NASA scientists said Monday. The US space agency's Mini-SAR radar found more than 40 small craters ranging in size from one to nine miles (1.6 to 15 kilometers), each full of water ice. "Although the total amount of ice depends on its thickness in each crater, it ... more

Pluto Approach Begins
Washington DC (SPX) Feb 26, 2010
Another milestone passed! Today NASA's New Horizons spacecraft is 15.96 astronomical units (about 2.39 billion kilometers, or 1.48 billion miles) from the Sun - putting it halfway between Earth's location on launch day in January 2006, and Pluto's place during New Horizons' encounter with the planet in July 2015. "From here on out, we're on approach to an encounter with the Pluto system," says New Horizons Principal Investigator Alan Stern, from the Southwest Research Institute. "The second half o ... read more
