NASA Radar Finds Ice Deposits At Moon's North Pole
Washington DC (SPX) Mar 02, 2010
Using data from a NASA radar that flew aboard India's Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, scientists have detected ice deposits near the moon's north pole. NASA's Mini-SAR instrument, a lightweight, synthetic aperture radar, found more than 40 small craters with water ice. The craters range in size from 1 to 9 miles (2 to15 km) in diameter. Although the total amount of ice depends on its thickness in each crater, it's estimated there could be at least 1.3 million pounds (600 million metric tons) of water ic ... read more

India To Initiate Activities For Chandrayaan-II
Bangalore, India (PTI) Feb 24, 2010
After a successful maiden moon mission, India will initiate the process for its sequel Chandrayaan-II, President Pratibha Patil said. "...Activities towards the Chandrayaan-II Mission will be initiated," she said in her address to the joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament here. Under Chandrayaan-II, space scientists plan to land two robotic rovers on the surface of the moon that ... more

Behold The Violent History Of Saturn's White Whale Moon
Pasadena CA (JPL) Feb 22, 2010
Like the battered white whale Moby Dick taunting Captain Ahab, Saturn's moon Prometheus surges toward the viewer in a 3-D image from NASA's Cassini spacecraft. The image exposes the irregular shape and circular surface scars on Prometheus, pointing to a violent history. These craters are probably the remnants from impacts long ago. Prometheus is one of Saturn's innermost moons. It or ... more

US lunar pull-out leaves China shooting for moon
Beijing (AFP) Feb 21, 2010
China aims to land its first astronauts on the moon within a decade at the dawn of a new era of manned space exploration - a race it now leads thanks to the US decision to drop its lunar programme. US President Barack Obama earlier this month said he planned to drop the costly Constellation space programme, a budget move that would kill off future moon exploration if it is approved by Congr ... more

Jurassic Space: Ancient Galaxies Come Together After Billions Of Years
Baltimore, MD (SPX) Feb 19, 2010
Imagine finding a living dinosaur in your backyard. Astronomers have found the astronomical equivalent of prehistoric life in our intergalactic backyard: a group of small, ancient galaxies that has waited 10 billion years to come together. These "late bloomers" are on their way to building a large elliptical galaxy. Such encounters between dwarf galaxies are normally seen billions of light-years away and therefore occurred billions of years ago. But these galaxies, members of Hickson Compact Group ... read more
