First Observation Of T2K Neutrino Event At Super-Kamiokande
Kamiokande, Japan (SPX) Mar 01, 2010
UK particle physicists working on the multinational T2K project, which is designed to detect some of the least understood particles in the universe, have helped track their first neutrino which has travelled 185 miles (295 km) under Japan. The detection of the neutrino as it passed from the East to the West of the country means the study of the mysterious phenomenon of neutrino oscillations, which it is hoped will shed more light on the role of the neutrino in the early universe, can now begin. It ... read more

Atom smasher ramped up in quest for secrets of universe
Geneva (AFP) Feb 21, 2010
Scientists are restarting the world's most powerful atom-smasher over coming days, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) said Sunday, as they prepare a new campaign to explore the secrets of the universe. The 3.9 billion euro (5.6 billion dollars) Large Hadron Collider (LHC) was shut down in December to ready it for collisions at unfathomed energy levels. It was run for a few ... more

Jurassic Space: Ancient Galaxies Come Together After Billions Of Years
Baltimore, MD (SPX) Feb 19, 2010
Imagine finding a living dinosaur in your backyard. Astronomers have found the astronomical equivalent of prehistoric life in our intergalactic backyard: a group of small, ancient galaxies that has waited 10 billion years to come together. These "late bloomers" are on their way to building a large elliptical galaxy. Such encounters between dwarf galaxies are normally seen billions of light ... more

Colony Of Humans On Moon Possible In Future
Thiruvananthapuram, India (PTI) Feb 19, 2010
With the discovery of water on the moon, there was a distinct possibility of humans setting up a colony in the nearest satellite from the Earth, former ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair has said. The Chandrayaan-1 mission's finding that large quantities of water were present in the polar region of the moon opened up the possibility of splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen, Nair said at the ... more

Denver CO (SPX) Feb 19, 2010
NASA's Stardust-NExT (New Exploration of Tempel) spacecraft fired its engines for 22 minutes 53 seconds on Feb. 17 to purposely delay its arrival at comet Tempel 1 by 8 hours 21 minutes. In one year, the Lockheed Martin- [NYSE: LMT] built spacecraft will still fly by the comet on Feb. 14, 2011, Valentines' Day, but the encounter time will now be 8:42 p.m. PT.
