Dangerous Asteroid Safely Flies Past Earth
Moscow, Russia (RIA Novosti) Jan 14, 2010
An asteroid named 2010 AL30 whose unusual orbit frightened astronomers two days ago safely flew past Earth at a distance of 130,000 km (80,796 miles) on Wednesday. The asteroid some 10-15 meters long with parameters similar to a man-made object was discovered by the LINEAR survey of MIT's Lincoln Laboratories last Sunday. "The asteroid posed no danger anyway," said astronomer Leonid ... read more

Satellite Could Locate Hundreds Of Earth-Sized Planets
Boston MA (SPX) Jan 13, 2010
The race to find exoplanets - planets outside our solar system - continues to quicken. Last week NASA researchers announced that the agency's new space telescope, Kepler, has discovered five new exoplanets, expanding the number of known exoplanets to 422, an increase of about 25 percent in the past year alone. A satellite proposed by MIT researchers could acce ... more

Unprecedented Details Imaged On The Surface Of Betelgeuse
Paris, France (SPX) Jan 13, 2010
Using interferometry, an international team led by an astronomer of Paris Observatory (LESIA) obtained an unprecedented image of the surface of the red supergiant Betelgeuse, in the constellation of Orion. The image reveals the presence of two giant bright spots, whose size is equivalent to the Earth-Sun distance: they cover a large fraction of the surface. It is a first strong and ... more

Huygens Conference Marks Fifth Anniversary Of Titan Landing
Paris, France (ESA) Jan 11, 2010
On 14 January 2005 the European Space Agency's Huygens probe separated from the Cassini spacecraft and landed on Saturn's moon Titan. The touchdown on the surface of Titan marked the first, and so far only, landing of a man-made probe in the outer Solar System. To mark the fifth anniversary of this remarkable event, scientists will gather from 13-15 January at the CosmoCaixa science museum in Barcelona, Spain, to review the key scientific and engineering achievements of Huygens, to evaluate the current understanding of Titan, and to consider future Titan exploration missions. ... more
