Huygens Conference Marks Fifth Anniversary Of Titan Landing
Paris, France (ESA) Jan 11, 2010
On 14 January 2005 the European Space Agency's Huygens probe separated from the Cassini spacecraft and landed on Saturn's moon Titan. The touchdown on the surface of Titan marked the first, and so far only, landing of a man-made probe in the outer Solar System. To mark the fifth anniversary of this remarkable event, scientists will gather from 13-15 January at the CosmoCaixa science museum in Barcelona, Spain, to review the key scientific and engineering achievements of Huygens, to evaluate the current understanding of Titan, and to consider future Titan exploration missions. ... read more

First Annular Solar Eclipse Of 2010 On Jan 15
Delhi, India (SPX) Jan 11, 2010
January 15th will herald the first annular solar eclipse of the year, also the longest in the millennium. Ajay Talwar of the Amateur Astronomers Association told IANS, "Not only will this eclipse be the first of the year but also the longest of the third millennium, that is between 2001 and 3000. In India it will start at around 11 a.m. and end at around 3 p.m." "The eclipse will first ... more

Did Metabolism Come First In Evolution
Barcelona, Spain (SPX) Jan 11, 2010
A research published in Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences rejects the theory that the origin of life stems from a system of self-catalytic molecules capable of experiencing Darwinian evolution without the need of RNA or DNA and their replication. The research, which was carried out with the participation of Mauro Santos, researcher of the Department of Genetics and Microbiology ... more

Why Won't the Supernova Explode
Huntsville AL (SPX) Jan 08, 2010
A massive old star is about to die a spectacular death. As its nuclear fuel runs out, it begins to collapse under its own tremendous weight. The crushing pressure inside the star skyrockets, triggering new nuclear reactions, setting the stage for a terrifying blast. And then... nothing happens. At least that's what supercomputers have been telling astrophysicists for decades. Many of the b ... more

Astronomers Simulate How White-Dwarf Stars Merge And Go Supernova
Garching, Germany (SPX) Jan 08, 2010
Supernovae are spectacular events: Suddenly somewhere in the heavens a "new star" lights up and shines as bright as a whole galaxy consisting of billions of stars. The mechanisms behind these cosmic catastrophes are varied. Researchers at the Max-Planck-Institute for Astrophysics in Garching have now used computer simulations to confirm that some of these bright supernovae are due to the merger ... more

Second Smallest Exoplanet Found To Date Discovered At Keck
Kamuela HI (SPX) Jan 08, 2010
Planet hunters using Keck Observatory have detected an extrasolar planet that is only four times the mass of Earth. The planet is the second smallest exoplanet ever discovered and adds to astronomers' growing cadre of low-mass planets called super-Earths. "This is quite a remarkable discovery," said astronomer Andrew Howard of the University of California at Berkeley, or UCB. "It shows tha ... more

New Tidal Streams Found In Andromeda Reveal Galactic Merger History
Washington DC (SPX) Jan 08, 2010
An international team of astronomers has identified two new tidal streams in the Andromeda galaxy, the remnants of dwarf galaxies consumed by our large galactic neighbor. Analysis of the stars in Andromeda's tidal streams and other components of its extended halo is yielding new insights into the processes involved in the formation and evolution of massive galaxies, said Puragra Guhathakur ... more
