Runaway Anti-Matter Makes For Massive Stellar Explosion
Washington DC (SPX) Jan 05, 2010
University of Notre Dame astronomer Peter Garnavich and a team of collaborators have discovered a distant star that exploded when its center became so hot that matter and anti-matter particle pairs were created. The star, dubbed Y-155, began its life around 200 times the mass of the sun but probably became "pair-unstable" and triggered a runaway thermonuclear reaction that made it visible nearly ... more

Kepler Space Telescope Discovers Five Exoplanets
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jan 05, 2010
NASA's Kepler space telescope, designed to find Earth-size planets in the habitable zone of sun-like stars, has discovered its first five new exoplanets, or planets beyond our solar system. Kepler's high sensitivity to both small and large planets enabled the discovery of the exoplanets, named Kepler 4b, 5b, 6b, 7b and 8b. The discoveries were announced Monday, Jan. 4, by members of the Ke ... more

Astronomers Discover Waltzing Black Holes
Berkeley CA (SPX) Jan 05, 2010
Astronomers have discovered 33 pairs of waltzing black holes in distant galaxies. This result were presented by Dr. Julia Comerford of the University of California, Berkeley, to the American Astronomical Society meeting in Washington, DC. This result is particularly important because it shows that supermassive black hole pairs are more common than previously known from observations, and be ... more

Suzaku Spies Treasure Trove Of Intergalactic Metal
Washington DC (SPX) Jan 04, 2010
Every cook knows the ingredients for making bread: flour, water, yeast, and time. But what chemical elements are in the recipe of our universe? Most of the ingredients are hydrogen and helium. These cosmic lightweights fill the first two spots on the famous periodic table of the elements. Less abundant but more familiar to us are the heavier elements, meaning everything listed on the ... more

Moon Mission In Running For Next Big Space Venture
St. Louis MO (SPX) Jan 04, 2010
Nearly 40 years after the Apollo astronauts first brought samples of the Moon to Earth for study, researchers from Washington University in St. Louis are leading an effort to return to the Moon for samples that could unlock secrets of the early Solar System. Known as MoonRise, the proposed Moon mission is one of three finalists now bidding to become NASA's next big space science venture, a ... more

Researchers Recalculate Age Of Solar System
Tempe AZ (SPX) Jan 04, 2010
Lead-lead (Pb-Pb) dating is among the most widely used radiometric dating techniques to determine the age of really old things, such as the age of the Earth or the Solar System. However, recent advances in instrumentation now allow scientists to make more precise measurements that promise to revolutionize the way the ages of some samples are calculated with this technique. Radiometric dati ... more
