Thunderstorm on Saturn is a record-buster
Paris (AFP) Sept 15, 2009
A tempest that erupted on Saturn in January has become the Solar System's longest continuously observed lightning storm, astronomers reported on Tuesday. The storm broke out in "Storm Alley," a region 35 degrees south of the ringed giant's equator, researchers told the European Planetary Science Congress in Potsdam, near Berlin. Thunderstorms there can be as big as 3,000 kilometers ... read more

ESO Unveils Interactive 360-Degree Panoramic View Of Entire Night Sky
Paris, France (SPX) Sep 15, 2009
The first of three images of ESO's GigaGalaxy Zoom project - a new magnificent 800-million-pixel panorama of the entire sky as seen from ESO's observing sites in Chile - has just been released online. The project allows stargazers to explore and experience the Universe as it is seen with the unaided eye from the darkest and best viewing locations in the world. This 360-degree panoramic image ... more

New Transient Radiation Belt Discovered At Saturn
Pasadena CA (SPX) Sep 15, 2009
Scientist using the Cassini spacecraft's Magnetospheric Imaging instrument (MIMI) have detected a new, temporary radiation belt at Saturn, located around the orbit of its moon Dione at about 377,000 km from the centre of the planet. The discovery will be presented at the European Planetary Science Congress in Potsdam by Dr. Elias Roussos on Monday 14 September. Radiation belts, like ... more

Jupiter Captured Comet For 12 Years In Mid-20th Century
Potsdam, Germany (SPX) Sep 15, 2009
Comet 147P/Kushida-Muramatsu was captured as a temporary moon of Jupiter in the mid-20th century and remained trapped in an irregular orbit for about twelve years. There are only a handful of known comets where this phenomenon of temporary satellite capture has occurred and the capture duration in the case of Kushida-Muramatsu, which orbited Jupiter between 1949 and 1961, is the third long ... more

NASA Selects Target Crater For Lunar Impact
Huntsville AL (SPX) Sep 14, 2009
NASA's Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) is racing toward a double-impact on the moon at 7:30 am EDT on Oct. 9th. NASA has announced exactly where the crash will take place. The target crater is Cabeus A. It was selected after an extensive review of the best places to excavate frozen water at the lunar south pole. "The selection of Cabeus A was a result of a ... more

Magnetic Fields Play Big Role In Star Formation
Cambridge MA (SPX) Sep 10, 2009
The simple picture of star formation calls for giant clouds of gas and dust to collapse inward due to gravity, growing denser and hotter until igniting nuclear fusion. In reality, forces other than gravity also influence the birth of stars. New research shows that cosmic magnetic fields play a more important role in star formation than previously thought. A molecular cloud is a cloud of ... more

Chandrayaan Enables Study Interaction Without Magnetic Field
Bangalore, India (PTI) Sep 10, 2009
A Chandrayaan-1 moon mission payload has enabled scientists to study the interaction between the solar wind and a planetary body like moon without a magnetic field, a meeting convened by ISRO was told. The payload in question is a joint one of Sweden and India - Sub KeV Atom Reflecting Analyser (SARA) which covered the entire lunar surface several times, ISRO said in a statement at the end ... more

NASA Steps Closer To Power Option For Moon Habitat
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Sep 09, 2009
NASA has made a series of critical strides toward the development of new nuclear reactors the size of a trash can that could power a human outpost on the moon or Mars. Three recent tests at different NASA centers and a national lab have successfully demonstrated key technologies required for compact fission-based nuclear power plants for human settlements on other worlds. NASA's Mars ... more
