Spectacular First Images From A Rejuvenated Hubble
Huntsville AL (SPX) Sep 10, 2009
Astronomers have declared NASA's Hubble Space Telescope a fully rejuvenated observatory with the release of observations from four of its six operating science instruments. Sen. Barbara Mikulski of Maryland unveiled the images at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC. "This marks a new beginning for Hubble," said Ed Weiler, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. ... read more

Magnetic Fields Play Big Role In Star Formation
Cambridge MA (SPX) Sep 10, 2009
The simple picture of star formation calls for giant clouds of gas and dust to collapse inward due to gravity, growing denser and hotter until igniting nuclear fusion. In reality, forces other than gravity also influence the birth of stars. New research shows that cosmic magnetic fields play a more important role in star formation than previously thought. A molecular cloud is a cloud of ... more

Chandrayaan Enables Study Interaction Without Magnetic Field
Bangalore, India (PTI) Sep 10, 2009
A Chandrayaan-1 moon mission payload has enabled scientists to study the interaction between the solar wind and a planetary body like moon without a magnetic field, a meeting convened by ISRO was told. The payload in question is a joint one of Sweden and India - Sub KeV Atom Reflecting Analyser (SARA) which covered the entire lunar surface several times, ISRO said in a statement at the end ... more

NASA Steps Closer To Power Option For Moon Habitat
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Sep 09, 2009
NASA has made a series of critical strides toward the development of new nuclear reactors the size of a trash can that could power a human outpost on the moon or Mars. Three recent tests at different NASA centers and a national lab have successfully demonstrated key technologies required for compact fission-based nuclear power plants for human settlements on other worlds. NASA's Mars ... more

Heat And Radiation Crippled India's Maiden Moon Mission
Bangalore, India (PTI) Sep 09, 2009
Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Madhavan Nair has said that heat alone was not the culprit as India's maiden moon mission was called off much before its scheduled lifecycle recently. A combination of factors including radiation, caused calling off of the mission. As experts from across the country and abroad began a review of the mission here on Monday, Nair ... more

From earths to moons -- search for life elsewhere expands
    Paris (AFP) Sept 3, 2009
A powerful orbital telescope launched in March with a mission to look for habitable counterparts to Earth should also be able to detect small moons that could nurture life, scientists said Thursday. The NASA spacecraft Kepler is designed to monitor more than 100,000 stars over the next three years, looking for telltale dips in their brightness as orbiting planets pass in front of them. ... more

Did Zinc And UV Zap Life Into Being
Moffett Field (SPX) Sep 04, 2009
The Miller-Urey experiment, conducted by chemists Stanley Miller and Harold Urey in 1953, is the classic experiment on the origin of life. It established that the early Earth atmosphere, as they pictured it, was capable of producing amino acids, the building blocks of life, from inorganic substances. Now, more than 55 years later, two scientists are proposing a hypothesis that could add a ... more

XMM-Newton Uncovers A Celestial Rosetta Stone
Paris, France (ESA) Sep 04, 2009
ESA's XMM-Newton orbiting X-ray telescope has uncovered a celestial Rosetta stone: the first close-up of a white dwarf star, circling a companion star, that could explode into a particular kind of supernova in a few million years. These supernovae are used as beacons to measure cosmic distances and ultimately understand the expansion of our Universe. Astronomers have been on the trail of ... more
