Scientists Discover Surprise In Earth's Upper Atmosphere
Los Angeles CA (SPX) Sep 11, 2009
UCLA atmospheric scientists have discovered a previously unknown basic mode of energy transfer from the solar wind to the Earth's magnetosphere. The research, federally funded by the National Science Foundation, could improve the safety and reliability of spacecraft that operate in the upper atmosphere. "It's like something else is heating the atmosphere besides the sun. This discovery is ... read more

Spectacular First Images From A Rejuvenated Hubble
Huntsville AL (SPX) Sep 10, 2009
Astronomers have declared NASA's Hubble Space Telescope a fully rejuvenated observatory with the release of observations from four of its six operating science instruments. Sen. Barbara Mikulski of Maryland unveiled the images at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC. "This marks a new beginning for Hubble," said Ed Weiler, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. ... more

Chandrayaan Captures Halo Around Apollo-15 Landing Site
New Delhi, India (PTI) Sep 11, 2009
India's maiden moon mission has captured a halo around the site where US spacecraft Apollo-15 had landed on the lunar surface nearly four decades ago. The Terrain Mapping Camera onboard Chandrayaan-I has detected a halo around the Apollo-15 landing site on the moon which scientists claim was because of the surface disturbance caused by humans. The halo has been reported earlier by ... more

    Catastrophic Darkness
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Sep 11, 2009
A dinosaur-killing asteroid may have wiped out much of life on Earth 65 million years ago, but now scientists have discovered how smaller organisms might have survived in the darkness following such a catastrophic impact. Survival may have depended upon jack-of-all-trades organisms called mixotrophs that can consume organic matter in the absence of sunlight. That would have proved crucial ... more

Magnetic Fields Play Big Role In Star Formation
Cambridge MA (SPX) Sep 10, 2009
The simple picture of star formation calls for giant clouds of gas and dust to collapse inward due to gravity, growing denser and hotter until igniting nuclear fusion. In reality, forces other than gravity also influence the birth of stars. New research shows that cosmic magnetic fields play a more important role in star formation than previously thought. A molecular cloud is a cloud of ... more

Unlocking The Mysteries Of Neighbouring Galaxies
Kingston, Canada (SPX) Sep 08, 2009
An international team of astronomers, including Queen's University physicist Larry Widrow, have uncovered evidence of a nearby cosmic encounter. Their study indicates that the Andromeda and Triangulum galaxies, the two galaxies closest to our own, collided about two to three billion years ago. "The encounter forever changed the structure of the galaxies," says Dr. Widrow, a professor of ... more

Saturn Moon Could Power 150 Billion Labor Day Barbecues
Pasadena CA (SPX) Sep 08, 2009
Since its discovery by Dutch astronomer Christiaan Huygens in 1655, Saturn's most massive moon, Titan, has been known as a place of mystery and intrigue. The large, cloud-enshrouded moon is such a scientific enigma that for the past five years, it has been targeted by NASAs Cassini spacecraft with more than 60 probing flybys. One of its latest findings could be a valuable asset to future ... more

    Are Sunspots Disappearing
Huntsville AL (SPX) Sep 04, 2009
The sun is in the pits of the deepest solar minimum in nearly a century. Weeks and sometimes whole months go by without even a single tiny sunspot. The quiet has dragged out for more than two years, prompting some observers to wonder, are sunspots disappearing? "Personally, I'm betting that sunspots are coming back," says researcher Matt Penn of the National Solar Observatory (NSO) in ... more
