Starburst Cluster Shows Celestial Fireworks
Washington DC (SPX) Jul 07, 2010
Like a July 4 fireworks display a young, glittering collection of stars looks like an aerial burst. The cluster is surrounded by clouds of interstellar gas and dust - the raw material for new star formation. The nebula, located 20,000 light-years away in the constellation Carina, contains a central cluster of huge, hot stars, called NGC 3603. This environment is not as peaceful as it looks. Ultraviolet radiation and violent stellar winds have blown out an enormous cavity in the gas and dust envelo ... read more

UKIRT Unveils The Mysteries Of Massive Star Formation
London, UK (SPX) Jul 01, 2010
Using the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) astronomers have found the leading mechanism by which most of the massive stars form in our Galaxy. The largest near-infrared survey of massive star forming regions to date has revealed that a major fraction of these massive stars form by collecting matter onto disks around their equatorial regions. This was revealed by the detection of g ... more

Galactic Archaeologists Find Origin Of Milky Way's Ancient Stars
Durham, UK (SPX) Jul 01, 2010
Many of the Milky Way's ancient stars are remnants of other smaller galaxies torn apart by violent galactic collisions around five billion years ago, according to researchers at Durham University. Scientists at Durham's Institute for Computational Cosmology and their collaborators at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics, in Germany, and Groningen University, in Holland, ran huge compu ... more

First Directly Imaged Planet Confirmed Around Sun-Like Star
Montreal, Canada (SPX) Jun 30, 2010
A planet only about eight times the mass of Jupiter has been confirmed orbiting a Sun-like star at over 300 times farther from the star than the Earth is from our Sun. The newly confirmed planet is the least massive planet known to orbit at such a great distance from its host star. The discovery utilized high-resolution adaptive optics technology at the Gemini Observatory to take direct images and spectra of the planet. First reported in September 2008 by a team led by David Lafreniere (then at th ... read more
