GOCE Helping Reveal The Gravity Of Earth
Paris, France (ESA) Jun 30, 2010
The first global gravity model based on GOCE satellite data has been presented at ESA's Living Planet Symposium. ESA launched GOCE in March 2009 to map Earth's gravity with unprecedented accuracy and resolution. The model, based on only two months of data, from November and December 2009, shows the excellent capability of the satellite to map tiny variations in Earth's gravity. "GOCE is delivering where it promised: in the fine spatial scales," GOCE Mission Manager Rune Floberghagen said. " ... read more

Astro Anthracene
London, UK (SPX) Jun 24, 2010
A team of scientists from the Instituto Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC) and the University of Texas has succeeded in identifying one of the most complex organic molecules yet found in the material between the stars, the so-called interstellar medium. The discovery of anthracene could help resolve a decades-old astrophysical mystery concerning the production of organic molecules in space. The resea ... more

Plentiful And Potential Planets
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jun 24, 2010
Two planet-hunting telescopes - CoRoT and Kepler - are keeping astronomers hard at work cataloging far-distant planets that orbit other stars in our galaxy. CoRoT recently reported the discovery of six gas giant planets similar to Jupiter. Kepler, meanwhile, is not confirming the discovery of any planets, but has announced hundreds of planet candidates after only 43 days of scanning the stars. ... more

Earth-Like Planets May Be Ready For Their Close-Up
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jun 24, 2010
Many scientists speculate that our galaxy could be full of places like Pandora from the movie "Avatar" - Earth-like worlds in solar systems besides our own. That doesn't mean such worlds have been easy to find, however. Of the 400-plus planets so far discovered, none could support life as we know it on Earth. "The problem with finding Earth-like planets," said Stefan Martin, an engin ... more

Hubble Captures Bubbles And Baby Stars
Garching, Germany (SPX) Jun 23, 2010
A spectacular new NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image - one of the largest ever released of a star-forming region - highlights N11, part of a complex network of gas clouds and star clusters within our neighbouring galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud. This region of energetic star formation is one of the most active in the nearby Universe. The Large Magellanic Cloud contains many bright bubbles of glowing gas. One of the largest and most spectacular has the name LHA 120-N 11, from its listing in a ... read more
