Counting The Craters Of Titan
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Apr 23, 2010
A new study in the journal Icarus provides the latest round-up of the number of impact craters found on Saturn's moon Titan. Between 2004 and December 2007, Cassini had surveyed 22 percent of Titan's surface. Scientists analyzed images taken by the spacecraft's high-resolution Radar Mapper instrument, and found 49 impact craters. "Impact craters are created on every planet because of asteroids, comets and other debris that collide with their surfaces," said Charles Wood, senior scientist at ... read more

Russian sun probe lost: official
Moscow (AFP) April 19, 2010
Russian scientists acknowledged Monday that solar research satellite Koronas-Foton has been lost due to technical problems, barely a year after its launch. The probe, also known as CORONAS-Photon, was launched into orbit by Russia on January 30, 2009 but lost connection with its controllers at the end of the year when a problem with its solar power led to battery failure. "The probe has ... more

Craters Around Lunar Poles Could Be Electrified
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Apr 19, 2010
As the solar wind flows over natural obstructions on the moon, it may charge polar lunar craters to hundreds of volts, according to new calculations by NASA's Lunar Science Institute team. Polar lunar craters are of interest because of resources, including water ice, which exist there. The moon's orientation to the sun keeps the bottoms of polar craters in permanent shadow, allowing temper ... more

Building A Space Weather Forecasting System Using STEREO And ACE
Glasgow UK (SPX) Apr 16, 2010
Scientists from the University of Leicester have used observations from NASA's STEREO and ACE satellites to come up with more accurate predictions of when blasts of solar wind will reach Earth, Venus and Mars. Anthony Williams presented the results at the RAS National Astronomy Meeting in Glasgow. Recently, we have recently been experiencing an unusually quiet and long-lasting solar minimum, and solar storms caused by Coronal Mass Ejections have been scarce. Despite this, high pressure pulses of s ... read more
