![]() Greenbelt MD (SPX) Apr 19, 2010 As the solar wind flows over natural obstructions on the moon, it may charge polar lunar craters to hundreds of volts, according to new calculations by NASA's Lunar Science Institute team. Polar lunar craters are of interest because of resources, including water ice, which exist there. The moon's orientation to the sun keeps the bottoms of polar craters in permanent shadow, allowing temperatures there to plunge below minus 400 degrees Fahrenheit, cold enough to store volatile material like water f ... read more |

The Early Life Of A Neutron Star![]() Observations of how the youngest-known neutron star has cooled over the past decade are giving astronomers new insights into the interior of these super-dense dead stars. Dr Wynn Ho presented the findings at the RAS National Astronomy Meeting in Glasgow. Dr Ho, of the University of Southampton, and Dr Craig Heinke, of the University of Alberta in Canada, measured the temperature of the neu ... more Einstein's Theory Fights Off Challengers ![]() Two new and independent studies have put Einstein's General Theory of Relativity to the test like never before. These results, made using NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, show Einstein's theory is still the best game in town. Each team of scientists took advantage of extensive Chandra observations of galaxy clusters, the largest objects in the Universe bound together by gravity. One resul ... more Enceladus Leaves Plasma Bubbles In Its Wake ![]() Observations of how Saturn's moon Enceladus interacts with its environment show it leaves a complex pattern of ripples and bubbles in its wake. Sheila Kanani presented these results at the RAS National Astronomy Meeting in Glasgow. Enceladus sits deep within Saturn's magnetosphere, which is filled with electrically charged particles (plasma) originating from both the planet and its moons. ... more |

![]() Moffett Field CA (SPX) Apr 13, 2010 If aliens exist, where are they? The physicist Enrico Fermi asked this question 60 years ago, and it has since come to be known as the "Fermi Paradox". Given how vast the universe is, and the billions of years that life has had to spread across the cosmos, why have we not found any evidence of alien life? Paul Davies takes a fresh look at this question in his engaging and thoughtful new book, The Eerie Silence. Davies runs Arizona State University's Beyond Center for Fundamental Concepts in ... read more |
