A Planet-Like Companion Growing Up In The Fast Lane
Hilo HI (SPX) Apr 08, 2010
The cliche that youth grow up so fast is about to take on a new twist. This is due to the discovery of a very young planet-like object (with a mass somewhere between 5-10 times that of Jupiter), paired with a low-mass brown dwarf. What is unique about this system is that the planet-like body appears to have formed in about a million years-more rapidly than some theories of planet formation predict. Kamen Todorov of Pennsylvania State University and co-investigators made the discovery using the kee ... read more

A Precise Voyage To The Lunar South Pole
Paris, France (ESA) Apr 01, 2010
The south polar region of the Moon, with dark craters and high ridges, is a world away from the relatively smooth terrain visited by Apollo astronauts four decades ago. This rugged moonscape is the target for Europe's next leap into space. The possible deposits of water ice, heavily cratered terrain and long periods of sunlight make the lunar south pole and areas around it extremely intere ... more

Extracting Information From Starlight
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Mar 31, 2010
The cosmos is filled with stars. However, the closest star beyond the Sun is so far away, that it would take the fastest spacecraft 75,000 years to reach it. Astronomers can't study the cosmos by sending probes to gather information about other stars, as we do with our own Sun and its planets. Fortunately they don't have to. The information comes to us at the speed of light! The light of s ... more

Playing 'Pong' With The Blink Of An Eye
London, UK (SPX) Mar 31, 2010
University students have developed a computer game that is operated by eye movements, which could allow people with severe physical disabilities to become 'gamers' for the first time. The students, from Imperial College London, have adapted an open source game called 'Pong', where a player moves a bat to hit a ball as it bounces around the screen. The adaptation enables the player to move the ba ... more

1980s Video Icon Glows On Saturn Moon
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 30, 2010
The highest-resolution-yet temperature map and images of Saturn's icy moon Mimas obtained by NASA's Cassini spacecraft reveal surprising patterns on the surface of the small moon, including unexpected hot regions that resemble "Pac-Man" eating a dot, and striking bands of light and dark in crater walls. "Other moons usually grab the spotlight, but it turns out Mimas is more bizarre than we thought it was," said Linda Spilker, Cassini project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasaden ... read more
