How To Respond When E.T. Says Hello
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Apr 06, 2010
If mankind ever does receive a signal from extraterrestrials, one of our first decisions may be what to write back. As director of Interstellar Message Composition at the SETI Institute, psychologist Douglas Vakoch has thought a lot about this question. "The challenge of constructing any interstellar message is trying to anticipate what you and your recipient have in common," Vakoch said. "One thing we can guarantee is they won't be native speakers of English or Swahili or Chinese." And the ... read more

A Piece Of The Moon In Oberhausen
Cologne, Germany (SPX) Mar 29, 2010
It takes some imagination - the new exhibit on display at the 'Out of this World - Wonders of the Solar System' exhibition at the Gasometer Oberhausen, does not look very spectacular at first glance. Lent to the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fur Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) by NASA, it is grey in colour, small - weighing just 92.5 grams - and encased in a Plexiglas casting. But t ... more

Large Hadron Collider Set To Hit 7 Tera-Electron Volts
Moscow (RIA Novosti) Mar 26, 2010
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will for the first time collide particles at an energy of 7 tera-electron volts (TeV), or 3.5 TeV per beam, on March 30, the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) said on its website. The world's most powerful atom smasher accelerated its proton beams to 3.5 TeV per beam on March 19, but no collisions were practiced then. "Between now and M ... more

Cosmos has billions more stars than thought
Paris (AFP) March 24, 2010
Astronomers may have underestimated the tally of galaxies in some parts of the Universe by as much as 90 percent, according to a study reported on Wednesday in Nature, the weekly British science journal. Surveys of the cosmos are based on a signature of ultraviolet light that turns out to be a poor indicator of what's out there, its authors say. In the case of very distant, old galaxies, ... more

Zen And The Art Of Space Maintenance
Los Angeles CA (SPX) Mar 25, 2010
The challenge for the makers of Hubble 3D was how to somehow turn repairing a twenty year old beat-up piece of space technology into a dramatic and compelling story for a broad audience. Of course that piece of the technology inserted as the main character of the story is the several billion dollar Hubble Space Telescope that has a long and controversial history, beset by programmatic delays, bureaucratic infighting, technical setbacks and substantial cost overruns. The story revolves around ... read more
