LHC Produces First Physics Results
London, UK (SPX) Dec 07, 2009
After 20 years in the making, the first physics results have come out of CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Physicists from the University of Birmingham played a key role in analyzing these collisions and producing the first results from the 27 km circular atom smasher near Geneva. The results were submitted for publication by the ALICE collaboration just six days after recording the ... read more

Suzaku Spies Treasure Trove Of Intergalactic Metal
Washington DC (SPX) Dec 03, 2009
Every cook knows the ingredients for making bread: flour, water, yeast, and time. But what chemical elements are in the recipe of our universe? Most of the ingredients are hydrogen and helium. These cosmic lightweights fill the first two spots on the famous periodic table of the elements. Less abundant but more familiar to us are the heavier elements, meaning everything listed on the perio ... more

Mars Meteorite Debate Continues
Houston TX (SPX) Dec 03, 2009
Using more advanced analytical instruments now available, a Johnson Space Center research team has reexamined the 1996 finding that a meteorite contains strong evidence that life may have existed on ancient Mars. The new research focused on investigating alternate proposals for the creation of materials thought to be signs of ancient life found in the meteorite. The new study argues that ... more

Adler Planetarium Unveils World's Largest Image Of Milky Way Galaxy

Black Hole Caught Zapping Galaxy Into Existence
Paris, France (SPX) Dec 02, 2009
Which come first, the supermassive black holes that frantically devour matter or the enormous galaxies where they reside? A brand new scenario has emerged from a recent set of outstanding observations of a black hole without a home: black holes may be "building" their own host galaxy. This could be the long-sought missing link to understanding why the masses of black holes are larger in ... more

Blushing Dusty Nebula
Boston MA (SPX) Dec 02, 2009
A recent NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image of part of NGC 7023, or the Iris Nebula, highlights a perfect dust laboratory in the sky. On Earth, we tend to find dust nothing more than a nuisance that blankets our furniture and causes us to sneeze. Cosmic dust can also be a hindrance to astronomers because cameras using visible light cannot see through it. However, studying cosmic dust in ... more

Astronomy Question Of The Week: Is There A Photograph Of The Universe
Bonn, Germany (SPX) Dec 02, 2009
If the question means "Has anyone stepped outside of the universe with a camera and taken a picture of it?" then the answer is, of course, no. The concept of 'universe' means the totality of all things, including space and time. So logically, there can be no 'outside' to the universe. (Although speculative cosmological theories propose other concepts.) One - very abstract - representation ... more
