LHC Sets New World Record
London, UK (SPX) Dec 01, 2009
CERN's Large Hadron Collider has today become the world's highest energy particle accelerator, having accelerated its twin beams of protons to an energy of 1.18 TeV in the early hours of the morning. This exceeds the previous world record of 0.98 TeV, which had been held by the US Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory's Tevatron collider since 2001. It marks another important milestone on ... read more

Superior Super Earths
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Dec 01, 2009
Astronomers have discovered hundreds of Jupiter-like planets in our galaxy. However, a handful of the planets found orbiting distant stars are more Earth-sized. This gives hope to astrobiologists, who think we are more likely to find life on rocky planets with liquid water. The rocky planets found so far are actually more massive than our own. Dimitar Sasselov, professor of astronomy at ... more

Scientists Explain Puzzling Lake Asymmetry On Titan
Pasadena CA (SPX) Dec 01, 2009
Researchers at the California Institute of Technology, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and other institutions suggest that the eccentricity of Saturn's orbit around the sun may be responsible for the unusually uneven distribution of lakes over the northern and southern polar regions of the planet's largest moon, Titan. A paper describing the theory appears in the online edition of Nature ... more

Fermi Telescope Peers Deep Into Microquasar
Washington DC (SPX) Nov 30, 2009
NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has made the first unambiguous detection of high-energy gamma-rays from an enigmatic binary system known as Cygnus X-3. The system pairs a hot, massive star with a compact object - either a neutron star or a black hole - that blasts twin radio-emitting jets of matter into space at more than half the speed of light. Astronomers call these systems ... more

Two Successful Rockets With Experiments In Weightlessness
Esrange Space Center, Sweden (SPX) Nov 30, 2009
During the last week two sounding rockets with microgravity experiments were successfully launched from Esrange Space Center, the operational space facility of the Swedish Space Corporation (SSC). The Brazilian motor VSB-30 was used during both flights. The TEXUS project is a sounding rocket program with the primary aim to investigate the properties and behaviour of materials, chemicals ... more

    Partial Gravity And The Moon
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Nov 25, 2009
We've studied the human body in weightlessness for decades, and we now have a fairly good understanding of how it affects us. It's important to know this. Weightlessness, or microgravity, can seriously influence the health and performance of astronauts. One thing we don't properly understand, though, is the influence of partial gravity on the human ... more

Cosmic Slot Machine Matches Galaxy Collisions
Washington DC (SPX) Nov 25, 2009
A new website will give everyone the chance to contribute to science by playing a 'cosmic slot machine' and compare images of colliding galaxies with millions of simulated images of galactic pile-ups. These collisions, which astronomers call 'galactic mergers', could be the key to finding out why the Universe contains the mix of galaxies it does - some with trailing spiral arms, others ... more

First Black Holes May Have Incubated In Giant Cocoons
Boulder CO (SPX) Nov 25, 2009
The first large black holes in the universe likely formed and grew deep inside gigantic, starlike cocoons that smothered their powerful X-ray radiation and prevented surrounding gases from being blown away, says a new study led by the University of Colorado at Boulder. The formation process involved two stages, said Mitchell Begelman, a professor and the chair of CU-Boulder's astrophysical ... more
