Spitzer Discovers Saturn's Largest Ring
Pasadena CA (SPX) Oct 08, 2009
NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope has discovered an enormous and previously unknown infrared ring around Saturn. "This is one supersized ring," says Anne Verbiscer, an astronomer at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. "If you could see the ring in the night sky, it would span the width of two full Moons." Verbiscer is co-author of a paper about the discovery to be published online to ... read more

Southern Arizona Telescopes Will Point At Lunar Impact Early Friday
Tempe AZ (SPX) Oct 08, 2009
Astronomers at the some of the best ground-based telescopes in southern Arizona plan to observe two lunar impacts at 4:30 a.m. and 4:34 a.m. Arizona time Friday, Oct. 9. NASA is scheduled to fire a two-ton Centaur rocket, and four minutes later its shepherding spacecraft, into a crater at the moon's south pole for the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite mission, known as LCROSS ... more

Updated SMART-1 Image Of New Target For LCROSS Impact
Paris, France (ESA) Oct 08, 2009
The European Space Agency's SMART-1 team has released an updated image of the future impact site of NASA's Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS), after the LCROSS team announced a new target last week. LCROSS will search for water ice on the Moon by making two impacts into a crater named Cabeus at the lunar South Pole. The impacts are scheduled for 11:31:19 UTC and 11:35:45 UTC ... more

Western Astronomers Capture Spectacular Meteor Images
London, Canada (SPX) Oct 08, 2009
Astronomers from The University of Western Ontario have released footage of a meteor that was approximately 100 times brighter than a full moon. The meteor lit up the skies of southern Ontario two weeks ago and Western astronomers are now hoping to enlist the help of local residents in recovering one or more possible meteorites that may have crashed in the area of Grimsby, Ontario. ... more

NASA Refines Asteroid Apophis' Path Toward Earth
Pasadena CA (SPX) Oct 08, 2009
Using updated information, NASA scientists have recalculated the path of a large asteroid. The refined path indicates a significantly reduced likelihood of a hazardous encounter with Earth in 2036. The Apophis asteroid is approximately the size of two-and-a-half football fields. The new data were documented by near-Earth object scientists Steve Chesley and Paul Chodas at NASA's Jet ... more

History Of Universe Project Sees "First Light"
Sunspot NM (SPX) Oct 07, 2009
The history of the universe has yet to be revealed, but New Mexico State University astronomers are intent on unraveling its secrets, now that a new phase of a multiyear project has seen "first light." The Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III), took its first astronomical data on the night of Sept. 14. On that night, astronomers ... more

    LCROSS Viewer's Guide
Huntsville AL (SPX) Oct 06, 2009
Just imagine. A spaceship plunges out of the night sky, hits the ground and explodes. A plume of debris billows back into the heavens, leading your eye to a second ship in hot pursuit. Four minutes later, that one hits the ground, too. It's raining spaceships! Put on your hard hat and get ready for action, because on Friday, Oct. 9th, what you just imagined is really going to happen ... more

'Inverse Energy Cascade' May Energize Jupiter's Jet Streams
Tucson AZ (SPX) Oct 06, 2009
A new analysis of Cassini observations of Jupiter shows that an "inverse energy cascade" mechanism could be supplying the energy that powers and maintains the intense jet streams that typically rip through Jupiter's atmosphere at the same speeds as much shorter-lived hurricanes and tornadoes do on Earth. Exactly what mechanism generates and perpetuates dozens of ferocious, relatively ... more
