MESSENGER Gains Critical Gravity Assist For Mercury Orbital Observations
Baltimore MD (SPX) Oct 02, 2009
MESSENGER successfully flew by Mercury yesterday, gaining a critical gravity assist that will enable it to enter orbit about Mercury in 2011 and capturing images of five percent of the planet never before seen. With more than 90 percent of the planet's surface already imaged, MESSENGER's science team had drafted an ambitious observation campaign designed to tease out additional details ... read more

NASA's LCROSS Mission Changes Impact Crater
Sunnyvale CA (SPX) Oct 02, 2009
NASA's Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite mission (LCROSS) based on new analysis of available lunar data, has shifted the target crater from Cabeus A to Cabeus (proper). The decision was based on continued evaluation of all available data and consultation/input from members of the LCROSS Science Team and the scientific community, including impact experts, ground and space based ... more

First Light For BOSS - A New Kind Of Search For Dark Energy
Berkeley CA (SPX) Oct 02, 2009
BOSS, the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey, is the most ambitious attempt yet to map the expansion history of the Universe using the technique known as baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO). A part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III), BOSS achieved "first light" on the night of September 14-15, when it acquired data with an upgraded spectrographic system across the entire ... more

Hubble Highlights Two Galaxies That Are Losing It
Paris, France (ESA) Oct 01, 2009
Newly released images, taken by the Hubble Space Telescope before the recent Servicing Mission, highlight the ongoing drama in two galaxies in the Virgo Cluster affected by a process known as 'ram pressure stripping', which can result in peculiar-looking galaxies. An extremely hot X-ray-emitting gas known as the intra-cluster medium lurks between galaxies within clusters. As galaxies move ... more

GOCE Delivering Data For Best Gravity Map Ever
Paris, France (ESA) Oct 01, 2009
Following the launch and in-orbit testing of the most sophisticated gravity mission ever built, ESA's GOCE satellite is now in 'measurement mode', mapping tiny variations in Earth's gravity in unprecedented detail. The 'Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer' (GOCE) satellite was launched on 17 March from northern Russia. The data now being received will lead to a better ... more

Astronomy Question Of The Week: What Is Dark Energy?
Bonn, Germany (SPX) Sep 29, 2009
Exactly what is dark energy? Astrophysicists would also like to know the answer to this question - it determines how the Universe will develop. Cosmologists are fairly sure that it has been expanding since the Big Bang. What is still uncertain is whether this expansion will continue forever or whether the Universe will one day begin to collapse again, and also how much mass is present in ... more

MESSENGER's Neutron Spectrometer Zeros In On Mercury's Crust
Tucson AZ (SPX) Sep 29, 2009
"You bet, I'm really excited about this flyby," said William C. Feldman, a Senior Scientist at the Tucson-based Planetary Science Institute and Cognizant Co-Investigator for the Neutron Spectrometer flying aboard the MESSENGER spacecraft. MESSENGER will make its third and final pass around Mercury before returning in March 2011 to go into orbit around the solar system's innermost planet. ... more

Prototype Developed To Detect Dark Matter
Madrid, Spain (SPX) Sep 29, 2009
A team of researchers from the University of Zaragoza (UNIZAR) and the Institut d'Astrophysique Spatiale (IAS, in France) has developed a "scintillating bolometer", a device that the scientists will use in efforts to detect the dark matter of the Universe, and which has been tested at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory in Huesca, Spain. "One of the biggest challenges in Physics today is ... more
