The team carried out "human factors" testing within a full-scale mockup of Lunar I-Hab, one of the four modules of Gateway where astronauts will live, perform science experiments, and prepare for future missions to the Moon's South Pole. These tests are a key part of the preparation for launch, ensuring the spacecraft is optimized for crew comfort and safety.
Lunar I-Hab, provided by ESA and Thales Alenia Space, is set to launch during the Artemis IV mission. As part of that mission, four astronauts will launch aboard NASA's Orion spacecraft, powered by an upgraded Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, and deliver Lunar I-Hab to Gateway's orbit around the Moon.
Several international agencies, including ESA, the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and the Mohammad Bin Rashid Space Centre of the UAE, are contributing significant hardware to Gateway. This includes life support systems, modules for living and working, scientific experiments, and robotics.
With Gateway's support, international teams of astronauts will push forward humanity's exploration of deep space under NASA's Artemis campaign. This effort aims to uncover new scientific discoveries on the Moon and lay the groundwork for future missions to Mars.
