Caracas, July 21, 2026 (AFP) AFP

The number of people killed in the powerful dual Venezuela earthquakes last month rose to 5,278, according to official figures updated Monday.

The June 24 earthquakes, which recorded magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, profoundly impacted the north of the country, particularly the coastal state of La Guaira, near the capital Caracas.

National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez said on Telegram the death toll from the quakes reached at least 5,278, while the number reported injured remained at 16,740.

More than 850 buildings were damaged and 190 collapsed completely, according to official figures.

Venezuelan authorities have not provided an estimate for the number of people still missing.

The government reported that more than 23,500 people displaced by the disaster are living in makeshift camps, from stadiums to public squares, where volunteers provide medical services and distribute provisions.
