Space Telescopes Reveal Previously Unknown X-Ray Nova
Rohnert Park CA (SPX) Oct 26, 2010
Astronomers in Japan, using an X-ray detector on the International Space Station, and at Penn State University, using NASA's Swift space observatory, are announcing the discovery of an object newly emitting X-rays, which previously had been hidden inside our Milky Way galaxy in the constellation Centaurus. The binary system was revealed recently when an instrument on the International Space Station named MAXI (Monitor of All-Sky X-ray Image) on the Exposed Facility of the Japanese Experiment Modul ... read more

Moon's 'treasure chest' includes silver : study
Washington (AFP) Oct 21, 2010
Lunar soil is richer than previously thought, with traces of silver among the complex mix of elements and compounds found within one of the moon's craters, according to a study published Thursday. Researchers at Brown University who analyzed particles of lunar dust kicked up by a NASA-engineered collision last year found a surprisingly rich mixture that, in addition to the silver, included w ... more

Are Most Pulsars Really Magnetars In Disguise
Paris, France (ESA) Oct 21, 2010
Astronomers using XMM-Newton and other world-class X-ray telescopes have probed a curious source, which emits flares and bursts just like a magnetar but lacks the extremely high external magnetic field typical of these objects. The detection of this source, which could be powered by a strong, internal magnetic field hidden to observations, may mean that many 'ordinary' pulsars are dormant ... more

Beyond The Fog Of Time Most Distant Galaxy Ever Unvieled
Paris, France (ESO) Oct 21, 2010
A European team of astronomers led by Paris Observatory CNRS Director of Research Matthew Lehnert using ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT) has measured the distance to the most remote galaxy so far. By carefully analyzing the very faint glow of the galaxy they have found that they are seeing it when the Universe was only about 600 million years old (a redshift of 8.6), or 4.4% of its present age o ... more

India to build neutrino observatory
New Delhi (UPI) Oct 20, 2010
India says it will build a more than quarter-billion-dollar underground facility to join the worldwide search for elusive neutrino particles. The country's Environment and Forests Ministry has given the Atomic Energy Department the go-ahead for the neutrino observatory to be built in the Bodi West hills on the coast of Tamil Nadu state, the BBC reported Wednesday. The $270 million facility will be only the fifth observatory in the world dedicated to detecting the almost mass-less element ... read more
