NASA's EPOXI Mission Sets Up For Comet Flyby
Pasadena CA (SPX) Oct 01, 2010
Early on thursday, navigators and mission controllers for NASA's EPOXI mission watched their computer screens as 23.6 million kilometers (14.7 million miles) away, their spacecraft successfully performed its 20th trajectory correction maneuver. The maneuver refined the spacecraft's orbit, setting the stage for its flyby of comet Hartley 2 on Nov. 4. Time of closest approach to the comet was expected to be about 10: 02 a.m. EDT (7:02 a.m. PDT). The trajectory correction maneuver began at 2 p. ... read more

Cassini Dives Inside Saturn's Radio Aurora
Pasadena CA (JPL) Sep 27, 2010
The Cassini spacecraft has made the first observations from within the radio aurora of another planet than Earth. The measurements, which were taken when the spacecraft flew through an active auroral region in 2008, show some similarities and some contrasts between the radio auroral emissions generated at Saturn and those at Earth. Results were presented by Dr. Laurent Lamy at the European ... more

Magnetic Anomalies Shield The Moon
Rome, Italy (SPX) Sep 27, 2010
Scientists have discovered a new type of solar wind interaction with airless bodies in our solar system. Magnetized regions called magnetic anomalies, mostly on the far side of the Moon, were found to strongly deflect the solar wind, shielding the Moon's surface. This will help understand the solar wind behavior near the lunar surface and how water may be generated in its upper layer. Obse ... more

Dust Models Paint Alien's View Of Solar System
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Sep 24, 2010
New supercomputer simulations tracking the interactions of thousands of dust grains show what the solar system might look like to alien astronomers searching for planets. The models also provide a glimpse of how this view might have changed as our planetary system matured. "The planets may be too dim to detect directly, but aliens studying the solar system could easily determine the presen ... more

Sorting The Space Trash
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Sep 24, 2010
We all sort our rubbish by category, allowing recycling to take place. It's easy to understand why. Different items require different processes for disposal. For years, we have been growing increasingly aware of the trash problem in low Earth orbit. Debris from whole satellites to tiny flecks of paint poses a hazard to anything we launch. It can damage spacecraft or even claim lives. With more people expected to travel into space in the years ahead, and plans being drawn for even more infrastructu ... read more
