Composite Image Of 2010 Eclipse
Washington DC (SPX) Jul 16, 2010
A solar eclipse photo (gray and white) from the Williams College Expedition to Easter Island in the South Pacific (July 11, 2010) was embedded with an image of the Sun's outer corona taken by the Large Angle Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) on the SOHO spacecraft and shown in red false color. LASCO uses a disk to blot out the bright sun and the inner corona so that the faint outer corona can be monitored and studied. Further, the dark silhouette of the moon was covered with an image of the ... read more

Black Hole Blows Big Bubble
Boston MA (SPX) Jul 13, 2010
This composite image shows a powerful microquasar produced by a black hole in the outskirts of the nearby (12.7 million light years) galaxy NGC 7793. The large image contains data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory in red, green and blue, optical data from the Very Large Telescope in light blue, and optical emission by hydrogen ("H-alpha") from the CTIO 1.5-m telescope in gold. Extra Large Galactic Survey Puts Limits On Ultralight Particles
Washington DC (SPX) Jul 13, 2010
Physicists have long known that neutrinos are among the lightest and most evasive fundamental particles. Now a survey of the galaxies is helping to narrow down the neutrino mass even further. It seems that neutrinos are at best half as massive as previously estimated, according to an analysis appearing in the journal Physical Review Letters. The lower neutrino mass estimate is the re ... more

The recent recovery of Japan's never-say-die Hayabusa spacecraft has amazed the general public. It's also helped to ensure that there will be a Hayabusa 2 mission in the future, despite problems elsewhere in Japan's space program. This is good news. Hayabusa had more than its fair share of troubles, but managed to demonstrate how effectively most of the spacecraft was engineered. The missi ... more

Remote Easter Island braces for total solar eclipse
Hanga Roa, Chile (AFP) July 11, 2010
Tourists and scientists poured onto remote and mysterious Easter Island Sunday to watch a rare total eclipse of the sun, a mixed blessing for the Pacific community. An estimated 4,000 tourists, scientists, photographers, filmmakers and journalists flocked to the remote Chilean outpost of only 160 square kilometers (60 square miles), doubling the population of the barren island that already suffers from water pollution and deforestation. Conditions are anything but normal on Easter Island, deemed ... read more
