Jumbo Jellyfish Or Massive Star
Washington DC (SPX) Jun 18, 2010
Some might see a blood-red jellyfish in a forest of seaweed, while others might see a big, red eye or a pair of lips. In fact, the red-colored object in this new infrared image from NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) is a sphere of stellar innards, blown out from a humongous star. The star (white dot in center of red ring) is one of the most massive stellar residents of our Milky Way galaxy. Objects like this are called Wolf-Rayet stars, after the astronomers who found the first few ... read more

Astronomers' Doubts About The Dark Side
Durham, UK (SPX) Jun 15, 2010
New research by astronomers in the Physics Department at Durham University suggests that the conventional wisdom about the content of the Universe may be wrong. Graduate student Utane Sawangwit and Professor Tom Shanks looked at observations from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) satellite to study the remnant heat from the Big Bang. The two scientists find evidence that the ... more

Mystery Of Missing Debris
Huntsville AL (SPX) Jun 15, 2010
On June 3rd, 2010, something hit Jupiter. A comet or asteroid descended from the black of space, struck the planet's cloudtops, and disintegrated, producing a flash of light so bright it was visible in backyard telescopes on Earth. Soon, observers around the world were training their optics on the impact site, waiting to monitor the cindery cloud of debris which always seems to accompany a strik ... more

Asteroid Sample Return Capsule Recovered In Outback Australia
Sydney (AFP) June 14, 2010
Scientists in Australia's vast Outback on Monday recovered a capsule that they hope contains the first piece of asteroid ever brought to Earth - perhaps offering a glimpse into ancient space history. The pod was ejected from a Japanese space probe as the host vessel burned up in a spectacular display over Australia following a seven-year odyssey across the solar system to the far-off Itokaw ... more

Zooming In On An Infant Solar System
Tucson AZ (SPX) Jun 15, 2010
For the first time, astronomers have observed solar systems in the making in great detail. A team led by University of Arizona astronomer Joshua Eisner has observed in unprecedented detail the processes giving rise to stars and planets in nascent solar systems. The discoveries, published in the Astrophysical Journal (available online at http://xxx.lanl.gov/abs/1006.1651), provide a better understanding of the way hydrogen gas from the protoplanetary disk is incorporated into the star. By cou ... read more
